Annotators manually or semi-automatically add metadata, such as identifying objects in images, transcribing speech, or categorizing text. This process improves AI accuracy by providing high-quality training data. Annotation work is crucial for industries like autonomous driving, healthcare, and natural language processing.

Is it hard to get a job with data annotation?

Data annotation jobs typically require attention to detail and basic computer skills, and many positions are entry-level with flexible schedules. While some roles may require familiarity with specific tools or platforms, overall, they are accessible to those willing to learn and follow guidelines.

What does an annotation job do?

An annotation job involves labeling or tagging data, such as images, text, or videos, to help train machine learning models. Annotators use specialized tools to add accurate labels, which are essential for developing AI systems in fields like computer vision and natural language processing.

Which 5 jobs will survive AI?

Annotation jobs, which involve labeling data for machine learning models, are likely to persist as they require human judgment and domain expertise. Roles such as data annotators, quality control specialists, and domain-specific annotators will continue to be essential, especially in complex or nuanced tasks that AI cannot fully automate. Skills in critical thinking and familiarity with annotation tools will remain valuable in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Annotation position, and why are they important?

Excelling in an Annotation role generally requires keen attention to detail, strong analytical abilities, and a high level of accuracy, often backed by a relevant educational background. Familiarity with annotation tools, data labeling software, and sometimes basic programming or data management platforms is valuable. Effective time management, consistency, and clear communication are soft skills that differentiate top performers. These competencies are crucial to ensuring data quality and supporting the development of machine learning and AI systems.

Is data annotation real or fake?

Data annotation is a legitimate job that involves labeling data such as images, text, or videos to train machine learning models. It requires attention to detail and familiarity with annotation tools, and it is widely used in AI development across various industries.

What are the typical projects or tasks an Annotation specialist works on throughout the week?

Annotation specialists typically work on projects involving the labeling and categorizing of data—such as images, videos, audio, or text—to train machine learning models. Weekly tasks may include reviewing raw data, applying specific tagging guidelines, performing quality checks on completed annotations, and collaborating with team members or machine learning engineers to ensure accuracy and consistency. Frequent feedback sessions and ongoing updates to annotation instructions are common as project requirements evolve. This role often requires close teamwork and clear communication within a collaborative environment, especially for large-scale or rapidly changing projects.

Job description

About Overland AI
Founded in 2022 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Overland AI is transforming land operations for modern defense. The company leverages over a decade of advanced research in robotics and machine learning, as well as a field-test forward ethos, to deliver combined capabilities for unit commanders. Our OverDrive autonomy stack enables ground vehicles to navigate and operate off-road in any terrain without GPS or direct operator control. Our intuitive OverWatch C2 interface provides commanders with precise coordination capabilities essential for mission success.
Overland AI has secured funding from prominent defense tech investors including 8VC and Point 72, and built trusted partnerships with DARPA, the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command. Backed by eight-figure contracts across the Department of Defense, we are strengthening national security by iterating closely with end users engaged in tactical operations.
Role Summary

This role requires a strong, intuitive understanding of 3D space. It is an excellent fit for professionals who already have experience navigating complex spatial data, such as those with backgrounds in GIS, game level design, 3D modeling, or architecture.
*This position is expected to last approximately three months with potential to convert to a regular full-time position based on performance and business needs (see more details below)*
Key Responsibilities
  • Use specialized software tools to accurately label and annotate objects, terrains, and surfaces within complex 3D datasets.
  • Interpret raw point cloud data and 3D environments captured by our autonomous vehicle sensor suites.
  • Maintain strict adherence to annotation guidelines to ensure high standards of data quality and consistency.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to refine labeling guidelines and provide feedback to improve tooling workflows.
  • Identify and document edge cases, anomalies, or unexpected variables within the collected sensor data.

  • Demonstrated experience using at least one 3D software tool (e.g., Blender, Maya, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Unreal Engine, Unity, CloudCompare, or similar)

Desired Qualifications & Experience
  • Direct experience with LiDAR point cloud processing, photogrammetry workflows, or autonomous vehicle sensor data
  • Proven ability to interpret and manipulate point cloud data, 3D meshes, or volumetric datasets
  • Demonstrated proficiency in navigating, manipulating, and interpreting 3D spatial environments.
  • Track record of producing annotation, modeling, or drafting work that meets defined quality standards and specifications
  • Proven ability to follow technical guidelines and maintain consistency across large datasets (demonstrated through prior work samples or references)
  • Familiarity with version control or annotation quality assurance processes
  • Experience collaborating with engineering or data science teams in an iterative development environment
  • Prior experience working specifically with autonomous vehicle data, LiDAR point clouds, or photogrammetry.
