Annotation Math and Data Annotator roles both involve data labeling within AI and machine learning industries. Annotation Math may focus more on mathematical annotations, while Data Annotator generally covers broader data labeling tasks. Both roles often share similar work environments and required skills, making them closely related in the data annotation field.

What is an annotation math job?

Annotation Math jobs involve labeling, tagging, and categorizing mathematical data, such as equations, formulas, graphs, or written math problems, to create high-quality datasets. These annotated datasets are often used to train artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning models to recognize and process mathematical content accurately. Annotation Math professionals need a strong understanding of mathematics, attention to detail, and familiarity with annotation tools or platforms. This work is critical for improving technologies like automated math solvers, educational apps, and document digitization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an annotation math specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Annotation Math Specialist, you need a solid understanding of mathematics, attention to detail, and familiarity with educational or assessment standards, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with annotation tools, data labeling platforms, and sometimes LaTeX or similar mathematical typesetting systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and the ability to work independently are essential soft skills for accuracy and consistency. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure high-quality, precise annotations that support machine learning, educational resources, or assessment development.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in annotation math roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Annotation Math roles often encounter challenges such as interpreting ambiguous mathematical data, maintaining consistency in labeling complex equations, and managing repetitive tasks that require high attention to detail. Addressing these challenges involves following clear annotation guidelines, collaborating with team members to resolve uncertainties, and utilizing quality assurance tools to minimize errors. Regular feedback sessions and ongoing training also help ensure accuracy and support professional growth in this specialized field.

Senior Software Engineer, Perception ML Data

Nuro

Mountain View, CA

$193K - $291K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 9 days ago

Job description

Who We Are

Nuro believes self-driving vehicles are the most immediate and profound opportunity for AI to drive positive change in the physical world. Safer streets, more time for what matters, and easier access to the world around us, that's why we're building a universal autonomy platform: self-driving for all roads and all rides.
Founded in 2016, Nuro is a physical AI company developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology for a wide range of vehicles, use cases, and markets. Powered by the Nuro Driver, our universal autonomy platform enables the global mobility ecosystem to deploy autonomy at scale, from robotaxis and logistics fleets to personal vehicles.
With years of real-world deployment experience and a flexible, partner-led business model, Nuro is working toward a future where millions of autonomous vehicles powered by our technology help make everyday life safer, easier, and more connected.
Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Uber, NVIDIA, Google, Softbank, Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, and other leading investors.

About the Role

We're a team of high-output generalists where ML and systems engineering converge. This is not a "run the models" role. We reason from first principles about why a perception model learns what it learns, close the gaps that cap its performance, and raise the bar on the data and evaluation loop that drives autonomy.  Your work will directly impact how autonomous systems understand rare scenarios, adapt to global geographies, and scale safely.

About the work

You'll solve autonomy's hardest data challenges through applied ML and systems rigor:

  • Diagnose why perception models underperform on the long tail, and turn that into targeted data and training priorities.
  • Design eval metrics and regression detection that tell us whether a model is ready.
  • Curate and clean training data for segmentation and occupancy; hunt the data problems that silently cap performance.
  • Run controlled ML experiments and ablations; cleanly separate data problems from model problems.
  • Debug the full data train eval autonomy path, across ML and infra boundaries.
About You
  • BS in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Physics, Math or another quantitative area.
  • 4+ years of industry software engineering experience with Python fluency and C/C++ familiarity. Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical projects from design to completion.
  • You've implemented core ML from first principles (not only called framework APIs), and can reason about why a model learns what it does.
  • Hands-on perception experience with detection, segmentation, occupancy, 3D, or sensor data.
  • You're interested in solving data problems.
Bonus Points
  • Occupancy / BEV; sensor modalities (lidar, camera, radar).
  • Familiarity working with synthetic or autonomous driving data.
  • Experience building ML systems for robotic applications

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected pay range is between $193,930.00 and $291,150.00/year for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.

At Nuro, we celebrate differences and are committed to a diverse workplace that fosters inclusion and psychological safety for all employees. Nuro is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and expressly prohibits any form of workplace discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected characteristics. #LI-DNP
