What are animation studios?

Animation studios are specialized companies or production facilities that create animated content for various media, including films, television shows, commercials, and video games. These studios employ teams of artists, animators, writers, and technical staff who work together to bring stories and characters to life using techniques such as 2D animation, 3D animation, and computer-generated imagery (CGI). Major animation studios, like Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks, are known for producing some of the most popular animated movies and series worldwide. Animation studios play a crucial role in the entertainment industry by combining art and technology to produce visually engaging content.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in animation studios?

Professionals in animation studios often encounter tight deadlines and the need to balance artistic creativity with client or director feedback. Collaboration is key, as animators must communicate closely with storyboard artists, modelers, and sound designers to ensure consistency and meet project goals. Additionally, adapting to rapidly evolving software and industry standards is essential. The fast-paced, team-oriented environment can be demanding but also offers opportunities for skill development and creative growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an animation studio, and why are they important?

To thrive in an animation studio, you need strong artistic ability, a solid understanding of animation principles, and proficiency in design, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with industry-standard software like Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk Maya, or Toon Boom Harmony is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills are critical soft skills in this environment. These skills ensure the creation of high-quality, visually engaging content and effective collaboration across diverse production teams.

Animation Studios are organizations that produce animated content through collaborative teams, often on large-scale projects. Animation Artists are individual professionals creating animations, either within studios or independently. While both share similar credentials and work environments, studios focus on production management, whereas artists focus on creating animations. Understanding these differences helps job seekers and clients find the right fit for their needs.

Job description

Administrative Assistant, Music Creative and Production

Burbank, California, United States of America

Netflix Animation Studios is on a mission to entertain the world with bold, immersive animated films that are timeless and impactful. We are paving the way for the future of animation by building a community of amazing artists and talent across three vibrant locations globally. Come join us!

Netflix Animation Studios' Music Creative and Production team is looking for an Administrative Assistant with an interest and drive to be in the highly collaborative and creatively iterative space of animation film music.

The Role

The Administrative Assistant role will primarily support both the SVP of Music Creative and Production and the VP of Music Production, with some additional support of the team as needed. Based in Burbank, the Administrative Assistant will help facilitate and maintain their day-to-day schedules and executive office operations. The successful candidate will be instrumental in coordinating alignment between the music team and cross-functional partners. This requires a candidate who is positive and calm under pressure while juggling multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Additionally, this is an outward-facing role that involves working with talent representatives and executive offices to coordinate high-profile meetings and logistics. Being able to communicate effectively at an executive level, with the confidence to present and represent the team with proper social and professional etiquette, is necessary. The ideal candidate should be ready to build relationships early on, be nimble in their thinking and workflows, and possess exceptional communication skills. We are looking for an organized self-starter with exceptional follow-through, strong attention to detail, the ability to pivot easily, and a genuine love for working in a collaborative team environment.

About Music Creative and Production

The Music Creative and Production (MCP) Team at Netflix Animation Studios is focused on supporting a growing slate of animated features, where we strive to create a strong culture of collaboration, opportunity, and partnership. Music Creative and Production provides premier support to our productions and cross-functional partners by guiding the music creative and production process from development to launch. Our goal is to empower Netflix Animation Studios to entertain the world by deepening fan engagement and amplifying storytelling through music. We are responsible for supervising all aspects of music vision during physical production, from pre-production through final delivery.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Calendar Management: Efficiently and thoughtfully manage complex calendars for both the SVP and VP, as well as the team as needed, including booking and confirming large cross-functional meetings across multiple time zones.
  • Travel & Expenses: Coordinate comprehensive domestic and international travel arrangements; prepare and submit senior-level executive expense reports.
  • Communication & Liaison: Communicate and coordinate seamlessly with both internal studio teams and external personnel associated with our productions.
  • Onboarding & Operations: Assist with the onboarding of new team hires, and manage facilities or tech requests made by various productions.
  • Meeting Logistics: Populate agendas ahead of meetings, send team task reminders, and help moderate team meetings to keep things running smoothly and on time.
  • Documentation & Tracking: Attend meetings to take and distribute notes and follow up on timely action items. Update and organize team weekly agendas, slate trackers, team contact lists, org charts, and distribution lists (DLs).
  • Digital Asset Management: Maintain studio Google Drive databases and files for internal and external production use.
  • Team Events & Culture: Help plan team and production events (offsites, celebrations, etc.)
  • Special Projects: Dive into music creative research, compile playlists, brainstorm potential workflow efficiencies, project-manage team organization initiatives, and create/present high-quality team decks.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3+ years of experience as an administrative assistant, executive assistant, or in a similar high-volume coordination role.
  • Proven ability to prioritize a high volume of tasks and complex scheduling demands.
  • A strong and confident team-player mindset capable of thriving within a fast-paced studio environment.
  • High proficiency with Google Suite, Music DSPs (Apple, Spotify, etc.), and file-sharing programs (DISCO, WeTransfer, Dropbox, etc.)
  • A strong desire to operate within and champion the unique culture of Netflix Animation Studios.

Bonus Points (Preferred, but not required):

  • Previous film/music studio experience
  • General music industry experience (labels, publishing, or agency).
  • Creativity and visual flair in building presentation decks using programs like Google Slides, Canva or Photoshop
  • A deep passion for music and the art of animation
