An Animal Science Professor is an academic professional who teaches and conducts research on topics related to animal biology, nutrition, genetics, and production. They work at universities or colleges, educating students about livestock, companion animals, and agricultural practices. Their responsibilities include delivering lectures, supervising research projects, publishing scientific findings, and advising students. Many also collaborate with industry professionals and government agencies to improve animal health and productivity.
To thrive as an Animal Science Professor, you need advanced knowledge of animal biology, research methods, and a doctoral degree in animal science or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, statistical analysis tools, and educational platforms such as LMS (Learning Management Systems) is essential. Strong communication, mentoring, and organizational skills make someone stand out in this academic position. These skills are vital for effectively teaching students, conducting impactful research, and contributing to the academic community.
As an Animal Science Professor, you can progress through academic ranks, starting as an assistant professor and advancing to associate and full professor roles. Many professors also take on additional responsibilities such as department chair, research center director, or lead investigator on major grant projects. Opportunities for professional development may include publishing research, attending international conferences, and participating in collaborative projects with industry or government partners. These paths allow professors to expand their influence in academia, shape curriculum, and mentor the next generation of animal scientists.

A Research Fellow position in Life Sciences (LS) will require knowledge of either clinical-based research or laboratory-based research often obtained from a postdoctoral program.
A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Upon background check and CCATS Executive Committee approval, Research Fellow may have patient/research subject contact directly relating to and incidental to the original research program. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic.
The Ethylin Wang Jabs and Meng Wu labs are looking for a Research Fellow for several ongoing projects to investigate biologic regulators, pathways and networks involved in embryogenesis and birth defects. Applicants should have wet laboratory experience in molecular, cell and/or animal model systems. These projects involve a broad array of well-established techniques such as mouse genetics, CRISPR gene editing, cell culture, differentiation of iPSCs and organoids, microdissection of tissues, and RNA-seq, as well as emerging single-cell/spatial multi-omics profiling technologies, to study gene regulation at the cellular and tissue level. Projects in our labs are funded through NIH grants and contracts. The candidate will work within an integrated, multidisciplinary team of experimental and computational scientists. The faculty are dedicated to mentoring members of the laboratory toward their career goals.
Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere.

Mayo Clinic is the largest integrated, not-for-profit medical group practice in the world. We're building the future, one where the best possible care is available to everyone — and more people can heal at home. Our relentless research turns into earlier diagnoses and new cures. That's how we inspire hope in those who need it most. At Mayo Clinic, experts work together to solve the most challenging unmet needs of patients. Our history of innovation dates back almost 150 years, when brothers Will and Charlie Mayo pioneered an integrated, team-based approach to medicine. Today, that trailblazing spirit drives innovations like Mayo Clinic Platform — which powers new technologies to change how care is delivered to all.
