Job description

The Cooperative Education (CO-OP) program combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training, and is available through any career and technical program offered at OACTEP.ย  Qualifying seniors integrate classroom learning with supervised, practical work experience.ย  Eligible students apply for part-time employment in areas related to their chosen field of study.ย  Students are evaluated by their employers on a monthly basis, and receive related instruction in school each week.ย  To qualify for the CO-OP program, students must have passing grades in all courses required for graduation, have a Student Employment Training Agreement, have good attendance, and have an acceptable discipline record.ย  Students must have completed a minimum of one year in their career and technical program prior to applying for the CO-OP program.
The Cooperative Education (CO-OP) is a partnership between the high school, local employers and students.ย  CO-OP is an opportunity for students to use skills learned in high school and learn new skills in the workplace.ย  Students are required to keep a log of work activities and attend the CO-OP class.ย  Students are evaluated monthly by employers and have a Training Plan developed in conjunction with their employer.ย  All students will be required to take the appropriate NOCTI test at the conclusion of the program.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the agricultural teachers with the care of the animals at the Octorara High School livestock barn.
  • Clean animal stalls and ensure a sanitary environment for the animals.
  • Feed and water the animals.
  • Assist with care of the vegetables grown in the high tunnel greenhouse such as tying up tomato plants, pulling weeds, picking produce and dropping off items to the Octorara Food Cupboard.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical and Agriculture Skills:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of livestock care, feeding practices, and animal safety.
  • Perform routine cleaning and sanitation tasks in animal housing and greenhouse settings.
  • Assist with basic plant care, including pruning, trellising, weeding, and harvesting.
  • Properly use hand tools and basic agricultural equipment under supervision.

Safety and Physical Abilities:

  • Follow safety guidelines and biosecurity procedures to ensure the health of animals, plants, and people.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull materials related to feed, bedding, tools, and harvested produce.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and environmental conditions.
  • Stand, bend, kneel, and perform physical tasks for extended periods of time.

Hourly rate: $15.00
