What is animal rescue?

Animal rescue refers to the process of saving animals from dangerous, abusive, or neglectful situations and providing them with shelter, medical care, and rehabilitation. Animal rescue organizations work to protect stray, abandoned, or mistreated animals, often finding them foster or permanent homes. The main goal is to ensure the well-being and safety of animals, promoting responsible pet ownership and preventing cruelty. Rescued animals may include pets like dogs and cats, as well as wildlife in distress. Volunteers and professionals collaborate to give these animals a second chance at life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an animal rescue worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Animal Rescue Worker, you need knowledge of animal handling, first aid, and welfare, often supported by relevant certifications or experience with animals. Familiarity with animal control software, rescue equipment, and sometimes animal transport vehicles is typically required. Compassion, resilience, and strong communication skills are vital for building trust with animals and collaborating with the public and rescue organizations. These skills ensure the safety, effective care, and successful rehoming of animals in challenging and often urgent situations.

What are some common challenges faced by animal rescue professionals, and how can they effectively address them?

Animal rescue professionals often encounter emotionally challenging situations, such as witnessing animal neglect or working with traumatized animals. They may also face physical demands, unpredictable schedules, and the need to make quick decisions in high-stress environments. Building emotional resilience, practicing self-care, and collaborating closely with veterinary staff, volunteers, and local authorities can help manage these challenges. Additionally, ongoing training and open communication within the team are essential for maintaining a supportive work environment and ensuring the best outcomes for rescued animals.

Join Colgate-Palmolive, a caring, innovative growth company reimagining a healthier future for people, their pets, and our planet. Guided by our core values—Caring, Inclusive, and Courageous—we foster a culture that inspires our people to achieve common goals. Together, let's build a brighter, healthier future for all.

What You’ll Do

As our Lead Feline Veterinarian, you’ll be at the heart of our mission, combining your veterinary expertise with a passion for research to ensure the health of our animal colony and drive groundbreaking studies. Here’s how you’ll make an impact:

  • Champion Animal Health: Provide top-tier veterinary care—diagnosing conditions, performing procedures (surgical, dental, radiographic), and crafting treatment plans. Serve as a key clinical lead within a shared weekend and holiday on-call rotation.

  • Team Development & Mentorship: Mentor Animal Care and Research technicians to foster clinical competencies, support the development of new employees, and build strong teams.

  • Fuel Research & Innovation: Collaborate with scientists and nutritionists to design and oversee research protocols that advance pet nutrition. Use your expertise to select study populations, launch trials, and bring fresh ideas—like new tech or clinical approaches—to the table.

  • Improve Animal Welfare: Provide support and oversight of enrichment programs for colony animals. Mentor Animal Care and Research teams in appropriate low-stress handling methods, cooperative care, and positive reinforcement training to aid in research data collection.

  • Drive Data Excellence: Keep our records spot-on using advanced systems, ensuring every health detail and trial result is accurate and actionable to support our science-first approach.

  • Uphold Standards: Ensure compliance with regulations (USDA, company policies) and lead with safety in mind, fostering a culture where everyone thrives.

  • Showcase Our Work: Help maintain a welcoming, professional colony space and support tours to share our story with visitors.

This isn’t a full list—your role will evolve with our mission and your ideas!

We’re looking for a curious, skilled veterinarian with a knack for research and a heart for animals. Here’s what you bring:

 Required Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited program.

  • Kansas veterinary license (or ability to get one within 12 months).

  • 5+ years of veterinary experience, ideally with small animals or in a research setting.

  • Veterinary know-how: Diagnostics, surgery, dentistry, and care are your forte.

  • Research chops: You’ve got experience designing or supporting studies.

  • Team player: You build strong connections across departments.

  • Tech-savvy: Comfortable with data systems and modern tools.

  • Flexible: Ready for an on-call schedule (weekends/holidays included).

  • Innovator: You love finding new ways to solve problems.

Why Join Us?
  • Impact: Your work directly improves pet lives worldwide.

  • Growth: Access training, mentorship, and opportunities to grow in veterinary science and research.

  • Culture: Join a diverse, inclusive team that values collaboration and bold ideas.

  • Benefits: Competitive pay, health coverage, wellness programs, and more!

 How You’ll Succeed

We value leaders who think critically and act boldly. You’ll shine by:

  • Analyzing & Deciding: Using data to guide smart choices.

  • Planning Ahead: Keeping projects on track with clear priorities.

  • Pushing Innovation: Bringing fresh perspectives to pet nutrition science.
