About the Role:

We are seeking a Shelter Manager to oversee the overall operations of and welfare of the animals in our 78-year-old, no-kill, non-profit animal shelter. The shelter has approximately 100 cats and 22 dogs at any given time (most of the animals are at the shelter but there also are some in foster). The ideal candidate will have a passion for animals and animal welfare, possess strong leadership skills to manage shelter staff and volunteers effectively and provide guidance as needed, have excellent communication skills, and be a team player. The position reports to the President and the Board.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the shelter
  • Ensure the humane and ethical treatment of the shelter animals
  • Oversee the care, safety and wellbeing of the shelter animals and ensure that all medical and behavioral issues are addressed
  • Create and maintain shelter policies, procedures and standards
  • Ensure the shelter facilities are clean and safe
  • Ensure the proper creation and maintenance of all records regarding shelter operations and the animals
  • Responsible for the intake of animals, including from municipal shelters, rescue groups, other animal organizations and private surrenders
  • Manage and oversee the foster program
  • Work closely with the Adoption Coordinator to oversee adoptions
  • Work closely with the Medical Coordinator to oversee the medical care provided to the animals
  • Hire, train, supervise and schedule the staff
  • Ensure adequate food and shelter and medical supplies are ordered/maintained
  • Ensure that all communications, including emails, voice mail messages and texts, from the public are responded to on a timely basis
  • Review grants and draft social media posts, emails, and marketing materials for accuracy
  • Work closely with the President and occasionally, with the Board
  • Represent the shelter in public, at occasional events, and with the media
  • Manage budgets and resources effectively to ensure sustainability
  • Assist in providing daily enrichment for the dogs and walk the dogs as time allows
  • Perform other duties to advance the mission and goals of The Animal Haven as assigned by the President or Board of Directors
