What is animal acupuncture?

Animal acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on an animal's body to stimulate healing and relieve pain. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as arthritis, chronic pain, neurological disorders, and certain digestive or respiratory issues in pets and livestock. The practice is performed by veterinarians who are specially trained and certified in veterinary acupuncture to ensure it is safe and effective for animals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an animal acupuncturist?

To thrive as an Animal Acupuncturist, you need a deep understanding of veterinary medicine, acupuncture theory, and animal anatomy, usually supported by a veterinary degree and specialized certification in veterinary acupuncture. Familiarity with acupuncture needles, electro-acupuncture devices, and record-keeping software is typically required. Strong observational skills, patience, and effective communication with pet owners are standout soft skills in this field. These skills ensure safe and effective treatment, foster trust with clients, and promote the well-being of animal patients.

What is the difference between Animal Acupuncture vs Veterinary Acupuncturist?

AspectAnimal AcupunctureVeterinary Acupuncturist
CredentialsCertification in animal acupuncture, often through specialized coursesVeterinary degree + acupuncture certification
Work EnvironmentPrivate clinics, animal hospitals, mobile practicesVeterinary clinics, hospitals, animal care facilities
Industry UsageFocuses solely on acupuncture for animalsProvides comprehensive veterinary care including acupuncture
Common Search IntentAnimal acupuncture techniques, certification, treatment optionsVeterinary acupuncture services, licensing, animal health

Animal Acupuncture specialists focus exclusively on acupuncture treatments for animals, often with certification in animal acupuncture techniques. Veterinary Acupuncturists are licensed veterinarians who incorporate acupuncture into their broader veterinary practice. While both roles involve acupuncture, veterinary acupuncturists provide a wider range of medical services, whereas animal acupuncturists typically specialize solely in acupuncture treatments.

What are some common challenges faced by animal acupuncturists when working with different species?

Animal acupuncturists often encounter challenges related to the temperament and size of their animal patients. For example, nervous or aggressive animals may require extra patience and gentle restraint, while larger animals like horses can be physically demanding to treat. Additionally, communicating effectively with pet owners and veterinary teams to ensure a coordinated care plan is essential. Adapting acupuncture techniques to suit species-specific anatomy and behavioral differences is a key part of the role.

Above and Beyond Animal Care

Bella Vista, CA (just outside of Redding)

Primarily Small Animal + Some Mixed Animal Capabilities | GP + Urgent Care | No Weekends

Reputable, High-Quality Medicine within a Small Town

Above and Beyond Animal Care is a busy, well-run clinic providing personalized care to a loyal client base. We’re seeking a compassionate, collaborative veterinarian ready to dive into a full caseload. Whether you want to bring a specialty to a small town or simply practice great medicine in a supportive environment--you’ll feel right at home here.

Get to Know Us:

  • We’re primarily a small animal practice, but we do support some mixed animal needs for clients who also bring their dogs and cats here. For large animals, we’re equipped for trailer-in vaccines and lameness exams, and we can expand this area if you’re interested. That said, we’re looking for a DVM who primarily sees small animals, with the option to sprinkle in some mixed animal cases.

  • We’re well respected in the community and have built great relationships with our clients—many of whom now bring in multiple generations of pets.

  • Our Medical Director, Dr. Kayla, is skilled, dedicated, and is super kind. She’s an excellent partner who doesn’t shy away from complex cases and is looking for a collaborator to grow the practice with.

  • We welcome doctors who enjoy small animal care and also have a special interest in acupuncture, equine dentistry, nutrition, or other specialties. We have the equipment—or will get what you need—and the clientele to fully support your passion.

Support Team & Facility:

  • We have a highly efficient workflow, supported by a confident, communicative support team that works seamlessly together.

  • Equipped with IDEXX in-house labs, digital x-ray, digital dental rads, ultrasound, cold laser, acupuncture tools, and more.

  • 2 exam rooms, a surgery suite, and equine dental stocks

  • Our hospital has a small footprint, but we're busy and have a steady flow of wellness, urgent care, and a wide range of surgeries.

  • No weekends. Occasional after-hours client calls with additional pay.

  • Bella Vista, CA offers affordable housing (often with land!), great schools, and a warm and welcoming community feel. Access to Mt. Shasta, lakes, trails, waterfalls, and endless outdoor activities

Compensation: Our doctors are highly productive, efficient, and well-supported to do their best work. We are happy to tailor compensation based on your experience and schedule.

  • Competitive salary + production bonus, including online sales.

  • Bonuses

  • PTO, Holidays

  • CE allowance + CE PTO days

  • Medical, Dental, Vision insurance

  • Paid Parental Leave

  • 401k

Next Steps:

If you're looking for a rewarding opportunity to make a difference in a great community and work alongside a fun, skilled team, Above and Beyond Animal Care would love to meet you. APPLY TODAY and bring your skills to a clinic where you can grow and thrive—professionally and personally.

Qualifications:

  • All levels of experience

  • DVM or VMD

  • We require a valid California veterinary license and ability to obtain a DEA license

  • In addition to high-quality medicine and surgical skills, we are looking for doctors with excellent client communication and customer service skills as well as a dedication to continued education.

Our salary ranges are primarily determined by role, level, and location. The range provided for each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. The salary range for this opportunity is $130,000 - $165,000 annually. The Company offers competitive compensation along with a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision benefits, vacation, sick leave, 401(k), and more depending on location. You will be provided more detailed information about compensation and benefits for your specific location. Where required under applicable law, the company provides eligible employees with paid sick leave, health emergency leave, and similar benefits programs, all in accordance with the requirements of state and local law depending on the location of the practice you support.

The company is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
