Job Overview:

Join our dynamic surgical services team at Saint Barnabas Medical Center as an Anesthesia Assistant within the Operating Room department. In this critical support role, you will ensure the highest standard of patient safety by cleaning, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex anesthesia equipment and machines across all clinical anesthetizing areas. Operating in a fast-paced environment, you will manage vital supply inventories, establish clinical par levels, and partner closely with anesthesia providers to ensure seamless, high-quality patient care.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Active American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider Certification.
  • Basic foundational knowledge of aseptic techniques and hospital supplies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and typing skills to process medical documents accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to log into and utilize Vocera communication systems during all active working hours.
  • Physical capability to bend, stoop, lift, move heavy medical equipment, and stand or walk for most of the workday.
  • Successful completion of all hospital and departmental orientation programs.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience managing or ordering medical supply inventories through platforms like Value Link Hand Held or Materials Management.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with behavioral safety goals mandated by the Joint Commission and the Department of Health.

Scheduling Requirements

  • Status: Per Diem - Day

Essential Functions:

  • Equipment Maintenance: Cleans, maintains, and safely prepares all anesthesia equipment and machines, ensuring circuits and suction canisters are replaced after every single case.
  • Clinical Unit Support: Responds promptly to supply and technical requests across all specialized anesthetizing environments including the OR, Labor & Delivery, Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, MRI, CT, and GI Endoscopy.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Serves as the primary contact to troubleshoot critical anesthesia gear, including Glide Scopes, McGrath Video Scopes, flexible laryngoscopes, and advanced patient monitors.
  • Inventory Control: Reviews, stocks, and orders specialized anesthesia supplies to ensure necessary par levels are continuously met across all units.
  • Hazard & Safety Compliance: Adheres strictly to safety protocols regarding biological hazards, infection control, MSDS sheets, and OSHA guidelines, including the proper disposal of used syringes, equipment, and needles.
  • Anesthetizing Provider Assistance: Anticipates case developments and prioritizes emergency needs when an active procedure deviates from normal protocols to provide instant equipment back-up.
