Job description

Job Shift: Days

Job Type: Full Time

The Surgery Aide assists RN and ORT/scrub in room turnovers before, after, and end of day operative procedures. Organizes instrumentation and disposables for surgical procedure, ensuring all necessary supplies are assembled on the case cart prior to the procedure. Opens sterile supplies, instruments, and disposables, using sterile technique, in accordance with AORN Standards & Recommended Practices.  Assist O.R. RN and ORT/scrub after case cleanup (i.e. mopping room, wiping horizontal surfaces, changing linen, discarding trash/used linen, changing anesthesia disposable circuit, suction disposal and setup) and stocking rooms, according to established PAR levels.  Works in conjunction with RN as to equipment needed for next case. Takes call as needed.  Assembles case carts daily, gathers instrumentation and disposables off established/handwritten surgeon preference cards/pick lists. Works in conjunction with Sterile Processing Department to ensure instrument trays are available prior to any surgical case.

Minimum Education / Licensure / Certifications

Education:

  • Required: High School Diploma
  • Desired: GED

Minimum Experience

Required Training/Education/Experience/Certification:

  • Minimum one year recent experience in OR materials management and/or SPD in an acute care hospital.
  • Basic knowledge of AORN standards.

Desired Training/Education/Experience/Certification:

  • SPD or ORT certification.
  • Current BLS certification

  • Must be able to follow instructions, work quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment.
  • Must be independent in role, and autonomous in daily tasks; minimal supervision provided.
  • Analytical and grammatical skills are necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.

  • Provide assistance to RN and ORT/scrub in preparation of the operating room for surgical cases.
  • Provides care to the peri-operative patient under the direct supervision of the OR RN
  • Maintains operating room environmental standards according to recommended practices to ensure a safe, supportive environment for staff, medical staff and patient.
  • Additional Duties
    • Maintain good working relationship with surgical staff, sterile processing staff and surgeons.
    • Maintains open communication with OR front desk as to flow of surgical cases.
    • Takes initiative to keep up with OR schedule as to assist in quick efficient turnover of all surgical cases.
    • Attends all AM and PM OR Huddles to keep apprised of changes, needs, etc. of the surgical cases.
