Job description

Sr. Android Engineer, Design Systems

Are you passionate about Design Systems, solving complex UI problems, and creating scalable architectures? You'll be right at home here. The technology team participates in the research and development of highly scalable, data-driven, consumer-facing applications and identifies new technologies and trends to continually enhance our products and business. Work and learn from world-class talent that promotes a culture of experimentation and learning.

The Design System team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer who specializes in Android development and Design Systems. You will build and own Haven - Realtor.com's native Android design system - a greenfield project that will serve as the foundation for all of our consumer-facing Android applications, which see millions of unique visitors daily. You will collaborate closely with the designers on the Design System team to implement the Haven Figma library in code, translating design intent into production-ready Jetpack Compose components. As a part of this team, you will play a key role in enabling our engineering community across all of our consumer product lines to build scalable, consistent, and accessible applications.

We believe in leveraging the best tools to solve problems faster. You will be expected to utilize AI coding assistants and LLMs proficiently to accelerate development velocity, generate boilerplate, and troubleshoot complex debugging scenarios. Beyond simple usage, this role requires the critical judgment to verify AI-generated outputs for security, performance, and accuracy. You should be comfortable integrating AI tooling into your daily workflow to eliminate repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on high-impact architectural and strategic engineering challenges.

What You'll Do:

  • Build and maintain Android components in Haven that are modular, accessible (WCAG 2.2), performant, and consistent with their iOS counterparts
  • Contribute to the design token architecture and semantic layer that drives theming, density, and platform-specific adaptations across Haven
  • Own the design-to-code pipeline: from Figma specs to production-ready Jetpack Compose components with clean APIs, thorough documentation, and clear migration paths
  • Support product engineering teams in adopting Haven: office hours, code reviews, implementation guidance, and accessibility troubleshooting
  • Establish testing standards for Haven components, including unit, component, visual regression, and accessibility tests
  • Contribute to Haven's release process, versioning strategy, and changelog communication
  • Partner with the iOS engineer on the team to maintain cross-platform consistency without compromising platform-native patterns
  • Drive Android 16 and 17 compliance across Haven, including Edge-to-Edge, Predictive Back gestures, Adaptive Layouts for foldable phones and large screens, and floating element patterns aligning with iOS patterns
  • Optimize developer experience by developing intuitive component APIs, authoring thorough documentation, and providing migration guides for our engineering community
  • Provide engineering and design teams with technical guidance and support for component usage, code reviews, feature requests, bug fixes, UI and accessibility best practices through office hours and ad hoc requests
  • Build relationships with designers and engineers across different product lines and bridge gaps between product design and engineering
  • Research and identify opportunities for improvements to our existing processes and solutions, and create proof of concepts
  • Collaborate with the team lead and leadership to contribute to short/long-term goals and roadmaps
  • Engage in Agile ceremonies like standups, office hours, weekly planning, and retrospectives and work in a development process that is primarily Kanban

What You'll Bring:

  • 5+ years of development experience with up-to-date knowledge of Kotlin, Java, and the Android SDK
  • Direct experience contributing to or building a design system used by multiple product teams
  • Passionate about Design Systems and solving complex UI problems, and have a great sense for identifying design/interface patterns
  • Attention to detail, great sense of design, and commitment to beautiful user experiences
  • Strong experience with Jetpack Compose, including building reusable composables, theming, and Material Design integration
  • Deep understanding of design token architecture, including semantic layers and theming
  • Experience with Atomic Design methodology and breaking complex UI patterns into composable, reusable pieces
  • Familiarity with Figma as a source of truth and experience maintaining design-to-code parity
  • Experience implementing scalable UI interactions, animations, and transitions on Android
  • Strong grasp of Android accessibility, including TalkBack, content descriptions, touch target sizing, and WCAG 2.2 criteria
  • Experience with component system tooling such as Figma, Storybook, Zeroheight, or similar
  • Experience with component library architecture and best practices around responsive layouts and animation
  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug mobile application problems such as UI rendering performance, layout issues, APK/App Bundle size optimization, memory leaks, battery consumption monitoring and optimization, accessibility problems, device fragmentation bugs, etc.
  • Experience working within an engineering platform or enablement team
  • Experience working with a Design Systems team
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and trade-offs to both engineering and business audiences
  • Strong communication skills with a growth and learning mindset
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering/related field or equivalent professional experience
