Our Android apps are progressive and innovative. Our teams advocate for the best approach to building apps and look to the future by participating in Early Access Programs.

Our mobile teams sit at the intersection of our mission. We're looking for Android Engineers across several teams to help us take our apps to the next level. Some of the opportunities include:

  • Build engaging features to improve the reader experience in our flagship News app
  • Maximize subscriber value within our Growth Platform
  • Apply the latest trends in native and hybrid development to create engaging experiences on our Games team
  • Help users discover and cook the world's best recipes on the Cooking team
  • Build the foundational technologies that empower all mobile teams by joining the App Platforms team

This is a hybrid role, based at our New York City headquarters, reporting to the Mobile Engineering Manager and collaborating with native Android and iOS engineers, QA, product, project, data, and design professionals.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design and development of new features in our Android applications using Kotin and Jetpack Compose.
  • You will work closely with product, project, design, data, QA, and other engineers to participate in product development.
  • Participate in code reviews and willingness to learn from constructive feedback
  • Assist in debugging and fixing bugs to ensure a high-quality user experience.
  • Collaborate with internal NYTimes services and external APIs

Demonstrate support and understanding of ourย value of journalistic independenceย and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Experience with Android engineering fundamentals, including writing testable code, networking, data persistence, and UI
  • Basic proficiency in Kotlin
  • Demonstrated understanding of Android design patterns
  • Experience with layouts, themes, styles, views, and other Android UI concepts
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior professional Android engineering experience through internships, apprenticeships, or full-time employment
  • Experience with modern Android technologies such as Jetpack Compose and Coroutines

This role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
