An Android Developer Hybrid is responsible for building and maintaining mobile applications that run on the Android operating system using hybrid frameworks like React Native, Flutter, or Ionic. These developers leverage web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with native Android components, to create apps that work across multiple platforms. Their role involves coding, debugging, testing, and optimizing app performance while ensuring a seamless user experience. Additionally, they collaborate with designers and backend developers to integrate APIs and other services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Android developer hybrid?

To thrive as an Android Developer Hybrid, you need strong proficiency in Java/Kotlin, mobile app development, and cross-platform frameworks like Flutter or React Native, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with Android Studio, version control systems such as Git, and cloud platforms like Firebase is commonly required. Problem-solving ability, effective communication, and adaptability are valuable soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and handling evolving project requirements. These skills ensure seamless development, efficient teamwork, and the delivery of high-quality mobile applications across multiple platforms.

What are some common challenges faced by Android developers working in a hybrid (remote and on-site) environment?

Android Developers in hybrid roles often navigate challenges related to effective communication and collaboration across distributed teams. Balancing in-person meetings with remote work can require strong time management and proactive communication skills, especially when coordinating with designers, backend engineers, and QA testers. Additionally, ensuring consistent access to development tools and testing devices both at home and in the office is important. Many employers support hybrid Android Developers by providing robust remote collaboration platforms and regular team check-ins to maintain alignment on project goals and timelines.

Role Overview

As a Senior Mobile Software Engineer, you will be a key contributor on the Android team, owning significant features and technical areas within the FlexCount mobile application. You will work on highโ€‘scale, customerโ€‘facing systems, collaborate closely with backend and product partners, and help raise engineering quality through strong design and execution. This role emphasizes handsโ€‘on development, reliability, and performance rather than orgโ€‘wide technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain highโ€‘quality Android features for a missionโ€‘critical, enterpriseโ€‘scale application.
  • Own moderately complex problem spaces within the mobile application (e.g., offline behavior, background processing, sync reliability).
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, backend engineers, and QA to deliver features safely and predictably.
  • Diagnose and resolve performance issues, ANRs, and stability concerns in production environments.
  • Contribute to improving mobile reliability, scalability, and user experience across a large device fleet.
  • Follow and help evolve Android engineering standards, patterns, and best practices within the team.
  • Write wellโ€‘tested, maintainable code and participate actively in code reviews.
  • Support production incidents and participate in onโ€‘call rotations when required.
  • Mentor junior engineers through pairing, code reviews, and technical guidance.
  • Contribute to tooling, libraries, or refactoring efforts that improve team productivity.
  • Participate in sprint planning, estimation, and retrospectives as an engaged team member.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional Android development experience.
  • Strong proficiency with Kotlin and modern Android development practices.
  • Experience working on production Android applications with large user bases.
  • Solid understanding of performance optimization, threading, and background execution.
  • Experience building or maintaining offlineโ€‘capable or enterpriseโ€‘grade mobile applications.
  • Ability to debug complex issues using logs, traces, and profiling tools.
  • Experience collaborating in crossโ€‘functional, Agile teams.
  • Strong communication skills and a bias toward ownership and accountability.
  • Experience implementing or using Real User Monitoring (RUM) to understand app performance and user journeys.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with rugged or enterpriseโ€‘managed Android devices.
  • Familiarity with device fleet management, MDM environments, or kioskโ€‘mode apps.
  • Experience improving app startup time, sync performance, and responsiveness.
  • Exposure to mobile CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks.
  • Contributions to internal libraries, shared components, or platform initiatives.
Why Join Us
  • Work on a product used daily across thousands of retail locations globally.
  • Be part of a collaborative team that values engineering quality and pragmatic solutions.
  • Opportunity to grow technically and take on increased ownership over time.
  • Competitive compensation, benefits, and longโ€‘term career growth opportunities.
