What is analytics?

Analytics refers to the systematic computational analysis of data or statistics to discover, interpret, and communicate meaningful patterns and trends. Analytics professionals collect, process, and analyze data to help organizations make informed decisions, solve problems, and optimize performance. They may use statistical methods, data visualization, and predictive modeling in various industries such as business, healthcare, finance, and technology. Their work often involves working with large datasets, using specialized software tools, and translating complex findings into actionable insights for decision-makers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in analytics?

To thrive in Analytics, you need strong quantitative skills, proficiency in data analysis, and typically a degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as SQL, Python or R, and data visualization platforms like Tableau or Power BI—as well as relevant certifications—are commonly required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help translate complex data insights into actionable business strategies. These skills are crucial for extracting meaningful information from data, driving informed decisions, and delivering measurable value to organizations.

How do analytics professionals typically collaborate with other departments to drive business decisions?

Analytics professionals often work closely with departments like marketing, product development, finance, and operations to translate data insights into actionable strategies. They may attend cross-functional meetings, present findings, and help define metrics for success. Collaboration is key, as analytics teams must understand each department’s goals and challenges to provide relevant, impactful analysis. Strong communication skills are essential to ensure data-driven recommendations are clearly understood and implemented by non-technical stakeholders.

What You Will Do

Partner directly with business and product partners to understand objectives, identify reporting needs, clarify ambiguous requests, and translate business problems into actionable analytics solutions. Lead the design and development of new reporting, dashboards, and analytics for products and business areas where established reporting and processes may not yet exist. Write and troubleshoot complex SQL to gather, integrate, analyze, and validate data from multiple systems and sources, including platforms such as Redshift, Salesforce, and other enterprise systems. Build and enhance dashboards and reporting solutions using business intelligence and visualization tools such as Amazon QuickSight, Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms. Evaluate stakeholder requests, ask probing questions, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and recommend the most effective analytical or reporting solution based on the underlying business need. Own analytical initiatives end to end, from requirements discovery and data sourcing through solution design, development, implementation, validation, and stakeholder communication. Develop reporting and analytics that help business teams identify opportunities within the workplace participant population, support engagement activities, and measure results and business outcomes. Establish scalable reporting processes, data definitions, analytical approaches, and best practices that support newer products as they mature and strengthen overall analytics capabilities. Collaborate across business and technology teams to improve data availability, reporting processes, workflows, and automation while balancing priorities across multiple products and stakeholders. Serve as a subject matter resource and primary analytics owner for assigned products or reporting areas, providing recommendations to senior stakeholders and contributing to broader team standards and future capabilities.
