What do analytics engineers do?

Analytics engineers design, build, and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure to enable data analysis and reporting. They work with tools like SQL, Python, and data warehouses to ensure data is accurate, accessible, and well-structured for analysts and data scientists. Their role often involves collaborating with teams to optimize data workflows and ensure data quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an analytics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Analytics Engineer, you need a strong foundation in data modeling, SQL, and analytics engineering principles, often supported by a degree in computer science, data science, or a related field. Proficiency with data transformation tools such as dbt, cloud data warehouses like Snowflake or BigQuery, and version control systems like Git is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, communication, and collaboration abilities help translate business needs into scalable data solutions and foster teamwork. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring data quality, building reliable analytics infrastructure, and enabling data-driven decision-making across organizations.

What is the difference between Analytics Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectAnalytics EngineerData Engineer
CredentialsOften requires SQL, Python, data modeling certificationsRequires similar skills, often with additional focus on infrastructure and systems
Work EnvironmentFocuses on data analysis, visualization, and reportingBuilds data pipelines, manages data infrastructure
Industry UsageCommon in analytics teams, BI, and data-driven rolesPrevalent in data engineering, data platform teams

While both roles work closely with data, Analytics Engineers primarily focus on transforming data for analysis and visualization, whereas Data Engineers build the infrastructure and pipelines that enable data access. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role.

How does an analytics engineer typically collaborate with data scientists and business stakeholders on projects?

Analytics Engineers play a critical bridge role between data engineering and data analysis. They work closely with data scientists to transform raw data into clean, reliable datasets that are ready for advanced analytics or modeling. At the same time, they collaborate with business stakeholders to understand reporting needs, ensuring that data models align with business goals. Regular communication and iterative feedback are key, as Analytics Engineers often gather requirements, build data pipelines, and adjust data products based on stakeholder input.

Job description

Xometry (NASDAQ: XMTR) powers the industries of today and tomorrow by connecting the people with big ideas to the manufacturers who can bring them to life. Xometry's digital marketplace gives manufacturers the critical resources they need to grow their business while also making it easy for buyers at Fortune 1000 companies to tap into global manufacturing capacity.
Xometry is looking for an Analytics Engineer II to own the transformation layer and gold standard of reporting at Xometry. You will sit at the intersection of Data Engineering and Data Analytics, turning raw data into clean, well-modeled datasets that empower our entire organization to make better decisions. As a senior member of the team, you won't just be writing SQL; you'll be defining our data architecture, working with data analysts and data engineers.
How You'll Contribute:
  • Data Modeling: Design, develop, and maintain robust data models (using dbt) that serve as the foundation for all company reporting. Solid understanding of semantic modeling and multi-domain data architecture
  • Pipeline Excellence: Partner with Data Engineers to optimize ingestion and ensure the reliability of our data warehouse and query optimization
  • Business Partnership: Work with data analysts and stakeholders across the organization to translate complex business requirements into technical specifications
  • Code Quality: Lead the charge on version control, CI/CD patterns, and comprehensive testing (data quality and unit tests)
  • Documentation: Maintain a high-quality data dictionary to ensure everyone in the company speaks the same "data language"

What You'll Bring to Xometry:
  • 2-4+ years of experience within data analytics, analytics engineering, or data engineering
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining production-grade data models and transforming raw data into clean, actionable datasets
  • Proficiency in writing complex, performant SQL for data transformation and analysis
  • Practical experience with dbt for modeling and GitHub for version control
  • Experience working within cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake
  • Ability to build and maintain dashboards in tools like Looker, Tableau, or Power BI
  • Experience implementing data quality tests and participating in CI/CD workflows
  • Strong ability to understand business metrics and translate stakeholder requirements into technical tasks
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders clearly
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Must be able to work core aligned hours to US Eastern Time / GMT-5

The estimated base salary range for new hires into this role is $76,000 - $86,000 annually + bonus depending on factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, and location. We also offer a competitive benefits package, including 401(k) match, medical, dental and vision insurance; life and disability insurance; generous paid time off including vacation, sick leave, floating and fixed holidays, maternity and bonding leave; EAP, other wellbeing resources; and much more.
