What is an analytical manager?

Analytical Managers are professionals who oversee teams responsible for analyzing data to support business decision-making. They manage data analysts or data scientists, set analytical strategies, and ensure the accuracy and usefulness of reports and insights. Analytical Managers also work closely with other departments to identify data needs, interpret results, and drive improvements based on analytical findings. Their role requires a combination of leadership, technical expertise, and strong communication skills.

How does an analytical manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams within an organization?

Analytical Managers often work closely with departments such as marketing, finance, operations, and IT to provide data-driven insights that inform business decisions. They translate complex data into actionable recommendations, facilitate discussions to align analytics with strategic goals, and ensure data solutions meet the needs of various stakeholders. Regular meetings, project updates, and collaborative tools are commonly used to maintain clear communication and drive successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an analytical manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Analytical Manager, you need strong quantitative analysis skills, experience in data modeling, and a relevant degree such as statistics, mathematics, or business analytics. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, leadership, and effective communication skills help you translate complex data into actionable business strategies. These skills are essential to drive informed decision-making, manage analytical teams, and deliver impactful insights for organizational growth.

This role is designed as a hybrid of insight generation and data quality leadership, with a strong hands-on expectation in reporting, data modeling, and analysis.

This role supports marketplace leadership by improving the systems, processes, and cross-functional execution that drives marketplace performance, scalability, and customer experience.

The Truly Free BI function currently operates across Looker, DBT, BigQuery, and Cerebro, and recent internal assessment work identified major opportunities in report governance, data reliability, monitoring, refresh ownership, and operational accountability.

The Senior Business Intelligence Manager will turn marketplace data into clear business decisions while also building the processes, standards, and technical foundation required for trusted reporting.

Core Objective

Build and lead a marketplace BI function that helps Truly Free make faster, smarter, and more confident decisions by delivering accurate reporting, clear insights, strong metric governance, and dependable data operations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and improve dashboards, reports, and recurring analyses that support marketplace growth, seller performance, customer behavior, assortment decisions, conversion, retention, and profitability.
  • Serve as the primary BI partner to marketplace leadership by translating business questions into clear reporting, analysis, and recommendations.
  • Perform hands-on work in SQL, Looker, DBT, and related tools to develop trusted data models, reporting layers, and decision-ready outputs.
  • Define, document, and govern core marketplace metrics so leaders across departments are working from a consistent source of truth.
  • Establish and maintain report validation standards, QA processes, documentation, refresh schedules, and ownership expectations for marketplace reporting.
  • Identify reporting gaps, data issues, broken logic, latency risks, and process breakdowns, then lead corrective action with urgency.
  • Build monitoring and alerting practices around critical marketplace datasets and reporting workflows to improve reliability and reduce downstream risk.
  • Partner closely with Marketplace Operations, Seller Success, Finance, Marketing, Product, and Technology to prioritize BI needs and deliver practical solutions.
  • Manage BI intake, prioritization, and delivery cadence for marketplace work using a structured backlog and sprint-based approach consistent with existing BI team workflows.
  • Lead deep-dive analysis on key marketplace opportunities and risks, including growth trends, seller quality, customer lifecycle behavior, operational bottlenecks, and emerging performance issues.
  • Train business users on how to interpret reports correctly, apply filters appropriately, and use data responsibly in decision-making.
  • Contribute to a culture of accountability, clarity, speed, and business partnership within the analytics function.
  • Manage direct reports, contractors, or external BI resources as assigned, while continuing to operate as a strong hands-on contributor.
  • Performs other duties/projects as assigned.

Success in This Role

  • Deliver reporting that marketplace leaders trust and use regularly.
  • Improve the speed and quality of decision-making across the marketplace organization.
  • Reduce confusion caused by inconsistent metrics, unclear logic, or poorly governed reports.
  • Increase visibility into marketplace performance drivers, opportunities, and risks.
  • Build a more stable and scalable reporting environment for future marketplace growth.
  • Operate as both a strategic thought partner and a technical doer.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Analytics, Information Systems, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in business intelligence, analytics, data analysis, or a related field.
  • 1+ years of leadership, people management, or functional ownership experience preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and hands-on experience building dashboards and reporting workflows.
  • Experience with Looker and LookML, or equivalent BI platforms and semantic modeling tools.
  • Experience with DBT, BigQuery, and modern analytics stack concepts.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, metric definition, QA, documentation, and reporting reliability.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect business questions to analytical frameworks and practical recommendations.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong project management, prioritization, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • High level of ownership, attention to detail, and bias toward action.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in e-commerce, direct-to-consumer, retail, or marketplace business models.
  • Experience supporting multi-sided marketplaces, seller ecosystems, or partner performance analysis.
  • Familiarity with attribution, traffic source reporting, tracking links, and performance marketing analytics.
  • Experience building operational reporting standards, SLAs, and governance frameworks.
  • Experience managing analysts, BI developers, or analytics vendors.

Work Environment

  • This role typically operates in an office or hybrid knowledge-work environment.
  • The role requires frequent collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders across multiple departments.
