Job Summary:
The Department of Medicine offers a unique opportunity for a Business Intelligence Developer to lead the design, development, and delivery of analytic solutions to department leadership, faculty and staff within the department, leveraging a variety of analytic methods, tools, visualizations, and modeling techniques. This includes consultation and the development of trusted advisor relationships with leadership to assess analytics needs and facilitation of solution development by managing multiple concurrent efforts, including projects of significant complexity and risk. The candidate will work closely with a variety of stakeholders, including physicians, advanced practice providers, revenue cycle team members and health system leaders, coordinating analytics activities across the entire department clinical enterprise.
The selected candidate will lead the work of the Clinical Business Intelligence team to design, develop, test and maintain performance-optimized business intelligence (BI) solutions based on underlying data warehouse structures and the optimal match of user requirements and available data presentation methods and tools. The BI Developer will develop and maintain solution documentation, coaches lower-level BI developers, and performs mid-to-high-level complexity assignments that require a deep understanding of underlying data structures and associated tools. Through a matrix arrangement with the UW Health Enterprise Analytics (EA) department, the BI Developer will have access to clinical, financial, and operational data in order to provide the department with dashboards, quality assurance and clinical operations reporting.
- It is anticipated that this position will be remote and requires work be performed at an offsite, non-campus work location.
- This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations.The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.
- Candidates who demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities will be given first consideration:
- Demonstrated leadership in project management.
- Demonstrated ability to develop a compelling data story, presenting data in a way that provided actionable understanding to customers.
- Demonstrated experience working with EPIC Caboodle to abstract data and develop BI solutions.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Works with multiple data domains/sets and data architectures (unstructured/structured) and using advanced expertise in a broad set of enterprise-scale tools, matches the right data presentation modality to user requirements. Employs deep expertise in data visualization and storytelling to design, prototype, test, and deliver accurate, sustainable enterprise solutions for large-scale user populations
- Partners with a team of business analysts, business subject matter experts (SMEs), source system data analysts, data architects, and ETL developers to interpret documented user requirements for enterprise-wide stakeholders. Works with data warehouse architects, data modelers, and ETL developers to document and present highly complex options through mock-ups and prototypes, refining underlying data structures to best meet use cases
- Oversee, assess, and approve the content and quality of complex design/build documentation for approval by business SMEs and project team leads. Author documentation for highly complex design/build documentation outside of the expertise of lower level BI developers
- Designs and documents enterprise BI development standards, assesses impact on existing BI projects, proposes solutions, and shepherds them through stakeholder feedback and governance approval. Resolves highly complex BI development issues escalated from lower-level BI developers
- Review and approve, based on scope and requirements, BI developer resource effort and timing to design, build, test, and release BI developer solutions. Understand and balance developer resources across multiple competing projects to mitigate risks. Identify options for backfill or external resource acquisition to fulfil resource requirements
- Supervise and direct the work of Business Intelligence Team, ensuring projects are managed to timely completion and staffing needs are met.
- Use knowledge of healthcare industry, market environment, and clinical and business workflows and activities, to inform solution design and development. Partner with application team colleagues and others as needed for end-to-end solutions.
- Manage initiatives and projects of significant complexity and risk.

The Business Intelligence Team within the Department of Medicine (DOM) supports clinical operations and quality improvement to improve health outcomes across Wisconsin and beyond.
Compensation:
The starting salary for the position is $110,000 annually; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated success applying relational thinking in writing and validating queries against multiple data sources.
- Demonstrated success creating analytic solutions such as reports, dashboards, and business plans.
- Demonstrated success identifying needs and requirements of clients seeking analytic solutions.
- Demonstrated success using quantitative and qualitative methods to identify opportunity.
- Demonstrates professional maturity surrounding data access, data security, data sensitivity and data confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage knowledge and skill with a variety of query tools (e.g. SQL, R, Python), analytic techniques, tools and platforms, to analyze large quantities of data, from multiple sources, to design, create, and maintain, dashboards, business plans, forecasts, projections and presentations, models, algorithms, and statistical and financial analyses.
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant data analysis or analytics experience in healthcare (provider or payor).
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience using Epic Chronicles, Epic Registries, Epic Clarity and/or Epic Caboodle Data Warehouse.
