What does an analyst do?

An Analyst is a professional who collects, processes, and interprets data to help organizations make informed decisions. Their responsibilities often include researching trends, preparing reports, and providing insights that guide business strategies. Analysts work in various fields such as finance, marketing, operations, or data analysis, and use specialized tools and software to analyze information. They play a key role in identifying opportunities for improvement and supporting the decision-making process within a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Analyst, you need strong analytical thinking, quantitative skills, and a relevant degree such as in finance, business, or data science. Familiarity with data analysis tools (like Excel, SQL, or Python), business intelligence platforms, and sometimes certifications such as CFA or CAP are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for presenting insights and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills are crucial for transforming complex data into actionable strategies that drive informed business decisions.

How do analysts typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Analysts often work cross-functionally, collaborating closely with teams such as finance, marketing, operations, and IT to collect data, understand business needs, and provide actionable insights. This collaboration usually involves regular meetings, data sharing, and joint project work to ensure that analyses align with organizational goals. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as Analysts must translate complex data findings into clear recommendations for non-technical stakeholders. Building strong relationships with other departments helps Analysts stay informed about business priorities and deliver more impactful results.

What is the difference between Analyst vs Data Scientist?

AspectAnalystData Scientist

What analyst makes the most money?

Senior-level analysts in specialized fields such as financial, data, or management analysis tend to earn the highest salaries, often exceeding $100,000 annually. Factors like industry, experience, certifications, and location influence compensation levels significantly.

What degree does an analyst need?

An analyst typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in fields such as business, finance, economics, statistics, or related areas. Some roles may require or prefer a master's degree or professional certifications like CFA or CPA, especially for advanced or specialized positions.

What is an entry level analyst?

An entry-level analyst is a professional starting their career in data analysis, business analysis, or similar fields. They typically have limited work experience, often require a bachelor's degree, and use tools like Excel or basic data software to support decision-making and reporting tasks.

The Financial Analyst supports leadership in delivering timely, accurate financial insights that inform strategic and operational decisions across the organization. Working collaboratively with Finance, Operations, Manufacturing, QA/Engineering, and other cross-functional partners, the Financial Analyst helps translate complex financial and manufacturing data into clear, actionable recommendations for leadership.

We are seeking a detail-oriented, analytically minded professional who can operate effectively in a highly regulated, fast-paced manufacturing environment. The Financial Analyst plays a key role in budgeting, forecasting, cost analysis, and reporting, and contributes directly to the financial integrity and operational efficiency of the organization.

Responsibilities

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Partners with leadership to develop, manage, and refine the annual budget, quarterly forecasts, and long-range financial plans.
  • Builds and maintains financial models to support cost analysis, product line profitability, and manufacturing variance reporting (labor, material, and overhead).
  • Develops and tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) across departments, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Supports pricing analysis and margin analysis for new and existing product lines.

Operational Finance & Reporting

  • Prepares monthly financial reporting packages, including variance analysis (actual vs. budget vs. forecast) for executive leadership and department heads.
  • Analyzes manufacturing costs, standard costing, and inventory valuation in partnership with Operations and Supply Chain teams.
  • Supports month-end and quarter-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations related to FP&A activities.
  • Assists with capital expenditure analysis and ROI modeling for new equipment, product lines, or facility investments.

Compliance, Risk & Administration

  • Ensures compliance with internal controls, GAAP, and relevant regulatory and audit requirements specific to the medical device industry.
  • Prepares ad hoc financial analyses and presentations for executive leadership, board meetings, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting efficiency, and data accuracy through automation and system enhancements.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field required.
  • Minimum 4 years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, or a related analytical finance role.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel (financial modeling, pivot tables, complex formulas); experience with financial planning software a plus.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, IFRS, and standard financial/accounting principles.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including leadership and cross-functional business partners.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across departments and stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience in medical device manufacturing or a related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with standard costing, inventory accounting, and manufacturing variance analysis preferred.
  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) preferred.
  • Exposure to FDA-regulated or ISO 13485 quality environments preferred.
  • MBA, CFA, or progress toward CPA a plus.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • This is a hybrid position requiring a combination of remote work and regular in-office attendance based on business needs and company policy.
  • Work is primarily performed in a professional office and home office environment.
  • Requires prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer, including frequent use of a keyboard, mouse, and multiple computer monitors.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively via telephone, video conferencing, and in person.
  • Requires the ability to review, analyze, and interpret financial data, reports, and electronic documents with attention to detail.
  • May occasionally be required to move or transport office materials weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to remain stationary for extended periods while performing analytical and administrative tasks.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Compensation

Starting compensation range of $85,000.00 - $95,000.00 annually. Exact compensation will be determined by experience, education, licensure/certifications, and location, in accordance with applicable laws.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision packages
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Generous PTO policy
  • The opportunity to make a direct impact on a domestic and global scale - and most importantly, towards patient care.
