What does an analyst do?

An Analyst is a professional who collects, processes, and interprets data to help organizations make informed decisions. Their responsibilities often include researching trends, preparing reports, and providing insights that guide business strategies. Analysts work in various fields such as finance, marketing, operations, or data analysis, and use specialized tools and software to analyze information. They play a key role in identifying opportunities for improvement and supporting the decision-making process within a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Analyst, you need strong analytical thinking, quantitative skills, and a relevant degree such as in finance, business, or data science. Familiarity with data analysis tools (like Excel, SQL, or Python), business intelligence platforms, and sometimes certifications such as CFA or CAP are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for presenting insights and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills are crucial for transforming complex data into actionable strategies that drive informed business decisions.

How do analysts typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Analysts often work cross-functionally, collaborating closely with teams such as finance, marketing, operations, and IT to collect data, understand business needs, and provide actionable insights. This collaboration usually involves regular meetings, data sharing, and joint project work to ensure that analyses align with organizational goals. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as Analysts must translate complex data findings into clear recommendations for non-technical stakeholders. Building strong relationships with other departments helps Analysts stay informed about business priorities and deliver more impactful results.

What analyst makes the most money?

Senior-level analysts in specialized fields such as financial, data, or management analysis tend to earn the highest salaries, often exceeding $100,000 annually. Factors like industry, experience, certifications, and location influence compensation levels significantly.

What degree does an analyst need?

An analyst typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in fields such as business, finance, economics, statistics, or related areas. Some roles may require or prefer a master's degree or professional certifications like CFA or CPA, especially for advanced or specialized positions.

What is an entry level analyst?

An entry-level analyst is a professional starting their career in data analysis, business analysis, or similar fields. They typically have limited work experience, often require a bachelor's degree, and use tools like Excel or basic data software to support decision-making and reporting tasks.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Financial Analyst / FP&A Consultant
Job Description
This Senior Financial Analyst / FP&A Consultant role provides temporary coverage for the FP&A function during a leadership leave, with a primary focus on supporting month-end and quarter-end close reporting. You will work extensively in Excel to consolidate, map, analyze, and validate financial data, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. The role includes a shadowing period with the current FP&A leader through multiple close cycles, followed by independent ownership of close activities for a key quarter-end period.
Responsibilities
  • Support month-end and quarter-end close activities from business day -1 or -2 through business day 8, ensuring deadlines are consistently met.
  • Work extensively in large, complex Excel reporting workbooks with multiple tabs, formulas, pivot tables, and data inputs to prepare accurate financial reports.
  • Map financial data from local ledgers into SAP account structures and final consolidated reporting accounts, maintaining consistency and accuracy.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain close-related financial reporting files, schedules, and templates to support internal reporting needs.
  • Review financial outputs for accuracy, reasonableness, and completeness, identifying potential errors, unusual variances, or unexpected balances.
  • Perform variance analysis and support basic FP&A reporting needs, providing clear explanations for key movements and trends.
  • Document processes, capture detailed notes, and leverage existing standard operating procedure videos and training materials during onboarding and ongoing work.
  • Collaborate closely with the FP&A team to shadow the current manager through multiple close cycles, then independently support the September quarter-end close.
  • Handle limited ad hoc finance and reporting tasks as bandwidth allows, contributing to broader finance initiatives as needed.
  • Operate primarily in Excel with limited ERP involvement, ensuring data integrity and alignment between spreadsheets and source systems.

Essential Skills
  • Strong experience as a Financial Analyst or in FP&A, with demonstrated experience in corporate financial reporting and analysis.
  • Extensive month-end close experience, including supporting close reporting through multiple business-day deadlines.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including expertise with pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and working with complex formulas and large data sets.
  • Proven ability to manage large, complex Excel workbooks with multiple tabs, inputs, and linked schedules.
  • Experience performing variance analysis and a solid understanding of how financial outputs and reports should look.
  • Ability to identify glaring issues, unusual balances, or reporting errors in financial work products and escalate or correct them appropriately.
  • Comfort working with limited ERP involvement, relying primarily on Excel-based processes and tools.
  • Availability to start quickly and commit to the assignment through mid-October.
  • Ability to work onsite in Saginaw on a hybrid schedule, ideally four days per week.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Prior FP&A manager-level experience, including ownership of close processes and reporting, is highly beneficial.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment or working with multi-ledger structures is a strong plus.
  • Experience mapping local ledger accounts into SAP or other consolidated reporting structures is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is helpful but not required for candidates with strong, relevant experience.

Work Environment
This role is based in an office environment in Saginaw with a hybrid schedule, ideally four days onsite and one day remote per week. You will work primarily on a computer using large, complex Excel workbooks and will interact with SAP and other financial systems for data mapping and validation. The work centers around structured month-end and quarter-end close timelines, with more intensive workloads from business day -1 or -2 through business day 8. The environment emphasizes accuracy, attention to detail, and collaboration, with access to standard operating procedure videos and training materials to support onboarding and process consistency. Dress expectations align with a typical professional office setting.
