What is the difference between Analog Modules vs Digital Signal Processors?

AspectAnalog ModulesDigital Signal Processors
FunctionProcess continuous analog signalsProcess discrete digital signals
Required CredentialsElectronics or electrical engineering certificationsElectronics or electrical engineering certifications
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing, field installationsEmbedded systems, software development labs
Industry UsageTelecommunications, audio, instrumentationAudio processing, communications, automation

Analog Modules focus on processing continuous signals in various industries, while Digital Signal Processors handle digital data for complex computations. Both roles often require similar technical credentials and are used in overlapping environments, but their core functions differ significantly in signal type and application.

What are analog modules and what do they do?

Analog modules are electronic components or devices used to process, convert, or interface analog signals within a larger electronic system. They can amplify, filter, or convert analog signals to digital form (and vice versa), enabling communication between analog sensors, actuators, and digital controllers. Analog modules are commonly found in industrial automation, instrumentation, and control systems, where they play a crucial role in ensuring accurate signal processing and system performance.

What are some common challenges faced by engineers working with analog modules, and how can they be addressed?

Engineers working with analog modules often encounter challenges such as signal noise, component tolerance variations, and thermal drift, which can affect circuit performance. Addressing these issues typically involves careful PCB layout, thorough testing and calibration, and selecting high-quality components. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including PCB designers and firmware engineers, is also essential to ensure that analog and digital interfaces function seamlessly. Continuous learning about new components and best practices is key to overcoming these challenges and advancing in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Analog Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Analog Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, proficiency in analog circuit design, and a relevant degree such as a BSEE or MSEE. Experience with simulation tools like SPICE, PCB layout software, and familiarity with lab equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional candidates apart in this field. These abilities are crucial for developing reliable analog modules that meet performance specifications and integrate seamlessly into larger electronic systems.

Job description

Nordson Test & Inspection, a global leader in X-Ray & Test Systems and Optical Sensors and Metrology, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we are looking for candidates who share that same commitment.
Summary of the role
As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, where your ideas and contributions will be valued and respected.
Job Summary
We are looking for an Electrical Engineer who will play an integral role in our R&D team designing the next generation of high precision electronics and semiconductor inspection sensors. In this role, you will take ideas from concept to reality - driving the design and development of next-generation sensors that set new standards for accuracy and performance. You will be involved in this process from product conception to production. This position requires design conceptualization to meet product requirements, project planning and tracking, design implementation, test and verification to specifications, transition to production, continuation, and documentation.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design electronic circuits for 3D measurement products that utilize machine vision and pattern projection.
  • Interpret customer and internal product requirements and translate into product specifications, risks, and design concepts.
  • Risk reduction through feasibility studies of initial electronics concepts.
  • Contribute to project planning by estimating tasks, resources, schedules, NRE, production costs, and manufacturing support.
  • Design electrical circuits utilizing FPGAs, micro-processors and micro-controllers, System On Modules (SOMs), low speed devices with I2C and SPI, and high-speed devices like LPDDR4.
  • Ability to solve challenging problems with creative design solutions.
  • Supervision of PCB layout activities that must achieve challenging size, space, weight, and high-speed board requirements.
  • Implement FPGA logic using Verilog (preferred) or VHDL languages.
  • Manage fabrication and testing of prototype and production electrical designs.
  • Design and verification testing to internal and external specifications.
  • Development of manufacturing, calibration, and alignment processes.
  • Transition new designs to manufacturing.
  • Support existing products, customer issues, and supply chain issues.
  • Mentoring of Junior Engineers and Technicians.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • BS Electrical Engineering with 2+ years related experience.
  • MS Electrical Engineering

Preferred Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to take a new electronics design from conceptualization to schematic drawing, PCB layout, fabrication, verification testing, and transition to production.
  • Skilled in FPGA hardware and HDL design with a preference to the Xilinx/AMD toolset and Verilog language.
  • Skilled in digital and analog circuit design, including schematic capture.
  • Experience with communications interfaces like PCIe, Ethernet, USB, I2C, SPI, or RS-422.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded systems, micro-controllers, and real-time firmware is a plus
  • Knowledge of machine vision technologies like CMOS imagers, DLP display projection, Coaxpress, Cameralink, or MIPI is considered a plus.
  • Experience with power supply design and high-power LED drive circuitry.
  • Strong documentation skills that encompass schematic capture, PCB and BOM file management, theory of operation and design descriptions, test plans and results, and design issue logging and resolution.
  • Knowledge of high speed and high-density PCB layout, propagation and impedance calculations, and fabrication methods. PCB simulation knowledge a plus.
  • Ability to design electronics that will meet international compliance standards like CE.
  • Ability to self-manage, plan, multitask, and work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong communications skills.
