Develop, direct and support division-wide field implementation of company safety programs, operating instructions, rules, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the company's System Safety Program and regulatory requirements. The Lead Safety Specialist (Transportation & Customer Service Eastern Region) is a subject matter expert providing technical safety-related oversight, guidance and support to division(s), departments, and contractor stakeholders to eliminate injuries/accidents and reduce workplace risk.
- Monitor and assess field safety programs: Track safety, health, and injury prevention initiatives, analyzing trends and data to identify potential deficiencies and corrective actions.
- Oversee testing and implementation: Manage regional testing of protective equipment and safety products, including initiatives like Amtrak's prescription eyewear program, and conduct evaluations for noise exposure and other hazards.
- Collaborate on investigations and initiatives: Work with division, regional, and departmental staff on accident investigations, risk reduction, and hazard elimination, including participation in major rail incident investigations.
- Improve passenger safety: Lead regional efforts to enhance passenger safety, developing and implementing programs to reduce accidents and injuries, while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance and support: Verify implementation of safety programs through self-assessment, provide support to various teams, and collaborate with labor/management and safety committees to identify and mitigate safety hazards, while maintaining relationships with regulatory agencies and contractors.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 6 years of relevant work experience.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and FRA safety regulations, policies, programs, as well as personal protective equipment, safety engineering, accident/injury investigations procedures and operating rules, Amtrak safety rules and practices; experience with behavior-based and/or risk reduction safety programs. Demonstrated abilities to interface and coordinate with stakeholders, including division and department management, supervisor and labor as well as regulators, vendors and contractors.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 8 years of relevant work experience.
- Experience in a railroad-related capacity or position.
- Certified locomotive engineer, conductor, or qualified train dispatcher with a minimum of 3 years or experience.
- Robust working knowledge of Amtrak's operations including train operations, station operations, and onboard services.
- Proficient in safety regulations, policies, and programs, including personal protective equipment, safety engineering, and accident investigation procedures, with experience in behavior-based and risk reduction safety programs.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with excellent presentation abilities.
- Effective facilitation, coordination, and interpersonal skills, coupled with outstanding management and leadership abilities.
- In-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art safety regulations, policies, and programs, including injury prevention and personal protective equipment.

The salary/hourly range is $94,300.00 – $122,256.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
