Job Description
Job Title: Ammonia Refrigeration Technician
Location: Sterling, VA
Employment Type: Full-Time
Vendor Fee: 3%
Salary: $33.12/hr
Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Ammonia Refrigeration Technician with experience in industrial refrigeration and food manufacturing environments. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in ammonia systems, boilers, and utility equipment, along with a commitment to safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 2 years of ammonia refrigeration experience in an industrial setting, preferably within food manufacturing.
  • Must be able to pass respirator fit test, Pulmonary Function Test, and complete a 24-hour HAZMAT class.
  • Ammonia Certification from GCAP or RETA required.
  • EPA Type II certification required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate, test, troubleshoot, and repair ammonia refrigeration systems, boilers, hot water systems, domestic cold water, and compressed air systems.
  • Perform planned maintenance on all ammonia refrigeration and utility systems.
  • Operate and maintain spiral freezers.
  • Maintain the material integrity of refrigeration and utility rooms in line with best practices.
  • Perform or learn ammonia system pump downs for repairing or replacing components.
  • Complete and maintain all required documentation, including PSM-related modifications, Work Orders (WOs), and system operation notes.
  • Automate and digitize maintenance and refrigeration records.
  • Adhere to safety policies, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Conduct daily rounds and inspections of ammonia system temperatures and conditions.
  • Perform chemical testing on boilers and condenser towers.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by the Maintenance/Refrigeration Manager.

  • Strong technical knowledge of refrigeration, electrical, and general maintenance systems.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and process improvement.
  • Detail-oriented with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
