What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), you need a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field, along with registration as an AMFT intern. Familiarity with therapeutic modalities, case management systems, and documentation tools is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy, and cultural sensitivity help build strong therapeutic alliances with clients. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering effective therapy, ensuring ethical practice, and supporting diverse client populations.

What are some common challenges AMFTs (Associate Marriage and Family Therapists) face when transitioning from supervised practice to independent clinical work?

AMFTs often find the transition from supervised practice to independent clinical work challenging due to increased responsibility and the need to make clinical decisions without immediate oversight. Many experience growing pains with managing a diverse caseload, navigating complex family dynamics, and handling administrative tasks such as documentation and billing. Building confidence in one’s therapeutic approach and developing a supportive professional network are key strategies to successfully manage these challenges. Supervisors and peer consultation groups can provide valuable guidance during this phase, helping AMFTs refine their clinical skills and prepare for licensure.

What is an AMFT in counseling?

An AMFT, or Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, is a professional who has completed a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field and is working under supervision to gain the hours of experience required for full licensure. AMFTs provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families, addressing a range of mental health and relational issues. They work under the guidance of a licensed supervisor and are in the process of fulfilling state licensing requirements to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).

Job description

Pathway Therapy Center – Walnut Creek, CA

Pathway Therapy Center is seeking an Associate Therapist (AMFT) to join our growing team in Walnut Creek. This role is ideal for a motivated clinician who is eager to gain hands-on experience in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) while building a long-term caseload in a highly specialized and in-demand field.

We have an immediate need for in-person coverage of psychoeducational sessions within our IOP, making this a great opportunity for associates looking to gain structured program experience right away, with a clear path toward expanding into individual, couples, and group therapy work.

Pathway specializes in treating sex and pornography addiction, betrayal trauma, and related relational issues, and provides a high level of training, support, and clinical collaboration.

Position Overview

  • Location: Walnut Creek, CA (in-person required)
  • Schedule: Part-time to start, with growth to full-time as caseload builds
  • Primary Initial Focus:
    • Lead psychoeducational IOP sessions (immediate need)
  • Growth Path Includes:
    • Building an individual and couples caseload
    • Facilitating therapy groups

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead structured psychoeducational sessions within the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
  • Build and manage a caseload of individual clients and couples over time
  • Facilitate weekly therapy groups
  • Complete timely and accurate clinical documentation (progress notes, treatment plans)
  • Collaborate closely with the clinical team to ensure high-quality care
  • Participate in team meetings, consultation, and case coordination
  • Engage in networking and referral-building activities as caseload develops

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy or related field
  • Registered Associate (AMFT) in the state of California (current and in good standing)
  • Available for in-person work in Walnut Creek
  • Strong interest in working with:
    • Addiction (especially process addictions)
    • Couples and relational dynamics
    • Betrayal trauma
  • Highly organized, reliable, and able to follow structured curriculum (especially for IOP work)
  • Self-starter with initiative and follow-through
  • Growth-oriented with a willingness to be challenged clinically and personally
  • Interest in pursuing CSAT certification through International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience with group therapy or psychoeducational programming
  • Exposure to addiction treatment models

What We Offer

  • Immediate clinical hours through IOP facilitation
  • Weekly supervision (including support toward CSAT certification)
  • Training in a highly specialized niche with strong demand
  • A collaborative, growth-oriented team environment
  • Clear path to building a full caseload
  • Competitive compensation
  • Flexible scheduling as role expands

Who This Role Is For

This position is a strong fit for an associate who:

  • Wants structured clinical experience right away (not just waiting to build a caseload)
  • Is drawn to depth work, addiction, and relational healing
  • Is willing to invest in specialized training and long-term professional growth
  • Thrives in a team that values both clinical excellence and personal development
