What does an Amazon pilot do?

An Amazon Pilot is a professional pilot who operates aircraft for Amazon Air, transporting packages and freight between Amazon’s fulfillment centers and delivery hubs. Their main responsibilities include safely flying cargo planes, conducting pre-flight and post-flight checks, and ensuring timely deliveries of goods. Amazon Pilots must adhere to strict safety regulations, work with ground crews, and may fly varying routes according to logistics needs. They play a crucial role in Amazon’s supply chain, helping the company provide fast and reliable delivery services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Amazon pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Amazon Pilot, you need a valid commercial pilot’s license (typically an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate), strong aviation knowledge, and experience with cargo operations. Familiarity with aircraft such as the Boeing 767 or 737, proficiency in using advanced avionics, and adherence to FAA regulations are essential. Excellent situational awareness, decision-making, and communication skills help pilots handle dynamic situations and coordinate with crew and ground staff. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely delivery of cargo across Amazon’s air network.

What are some typical challenges Amazon pilots face when operating cargo flights, and how are they addressed?

Amazon Pilots often encounter challenges such as tight delivery schedules, varying weather conditions, and adapting to different airport environments. To address these, pilots undergo rigorous training in both flight operations and Amazon's specific logistics procedures. Close collaboration with ground crews, dispatchers, and operations managers is essential to ensure safe, timely deliveries. Additionally, Amazon emphasizes safety protocols and provides pilots with advanced technology and support to help them navigate these challenges effectively.

Job description

We are seeking a Senior Program Manager to lead the strategy and execution of new customer-facing delivery offerings within Amazon's Sub-Same Day (SSD) delivery network. This role owns the end-to-end program lifecycle - from pilot design through network-wide scale - for initiatives that introduce new speed, precision, and scheduling capabilities to customers. You will drive the expansion strategy, own the economic sustainability framework, and serve as the connective tissue between operations, science, tech, finance, and CX teams to ensure new offerings scale with confidence.

This is a VP-level visibility role where you will shape how Amazon evolves its fastest delivery experiences.
Key job responsibilities
- Own the expansion strategy and roadmap for new customer delivery offerings, including site sequencing, operating model configuration decisions, and scale decision inputs for leadership
- Lead the economic sustainability workstream - partnering with finance to model cost scenarios, track pilot economics against plan, and develop the investment framework that informs go/no-go decisions
- Drive the cross-functional program cadence across fulfillment operations, delivery operations, science teams, and tech teams to ensure capability readiness aligns with launch timelines
- Own the narrative for leadership reviews - synthesizing operational performance, customer insights, and financial projections into clear recommendations on expansion pace and investment trade-offs
- Define and manage the customer insights integration plan - coordinating quantitative lift analyses, qualitative behavioral studies, and downstream impact assessments to inform which CX trade-offs are acceptable at scale
- Develop the decision framework for monetization strategies, operating model adjustments, and cost levers based on customer data maturity and economic thresholds
- Identify and drive resolution of structural blockers to scale - including operational variability, science model deployment timelines, and capacity constraints at expansion sites
- Build mechanisms to ensure learnings from pilot sites transfer effectively to expansion sites, reducing launch instability and accelerating time-to-operational-maturity
