Altronic information

What is an Altronic and what do they do?

Altronic is not a job title, but rather a company specializing in the design and manufacture of ignition and control systems for industrial engines, particularly in the oil and gas industry. Employees at Altronic may work in engineering, manufacturing, sales, or technical support, focusing on products like ignition systems, control panels, and engine monitoring solutions. Their primary responsibilities include developing, assembling, and supporting advanced electronic solutions that improve the efficiency and reliability of industrial engines.

What are some typical challenges faced when working as a technician at Altronic, and how can they be addressed?

Technicians at Altronic often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex electronic systems in industrial environments and adapting to evolving technology standards. Staying up-to-date with the latest diagnostic tools and participating in ongoing training can help address these issues. Additionally, effective communication with engineers and production teams is essential for resolving equipment malfunctions efficiently. Being proactive about safety protocols and thorough documentation will also contribute to success in this role.

What is the difference between Altronic vs Generator Technician?

AspectAltronicGenerator Technician
CertificationsRelevant certifications in engine controls and power systemsCertifications in generator maintenance and electrical systems
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, testing, and servicing engine control systemsOn-site generator maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair
Industry UsagePower generation, engine control manufacturingPower plants, industrial facilities, backup power systems

Generator Technicians and Altronic professionals both work in power systems but focus on different areas. Altronic specialists typically handle engine control systems and manufacturing, while Generator Technicians focus on maintaining and repairing generators. Both roles require electrical and mechanical skills, but their daily tasks and environments differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Altronic technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Altronic technician, you need strong knowledge of industrial electronics, engine controls, and troubleshooting, typically supported by technical training or an associate degree in electronics or a related field. Familiarity with Altronic ignition systems, PLC programming, and diagnostic tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for diagnosing issues and interacting with clients. These competencies ensure reliable operation of critical equipment, minimize downtime, and provide excellent customer support.

Job description

Altronic has long been regarded as the world's leading manufacturer of ignition and control systems for industrial engines largely used in the oil and gas industry. Our products represent the industry standard for quality, which are all designed to improve engine performance and enhance reliability. We are looking for a skilled Embedded Electronics Hardware Engineer with a strong primary focus on schematic capture and PCB layout to join our team developing rugged embedded control systems for the industrial stationary engine market.

In this hands-on role, you will own the core hardware design process: translating system requirements into detailed schematics, developing high-reliability multilayer PCB layouts optimized for harsh industrial environments, and actively bringing up and debugging prototypes in the lab. You'll work closely with systems engineers, firmware developers, and manufacturing to deliver products that withstand vibration, extreme temperatures, EMI, and decades of continuous operation in power generation, gas compression, and heavy industrial applications.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented hardware designer who loves the full cycle of circuit design - from initial concept sketches to functional prototypes on the bench.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, design, and develop analog and digital circuits as required
  • Create detailed, well-documented schematics for embedded systems including microcontrollers, power supplies, analog sensor interfaces, high-voltage drivers, and industrial communication circuits
  • Perform component selection, derating analysis, and worst-case circuit analysis for reliability in harsh conditions
  • Design high-reliability multilayer PCBs (4-6 layers typical) with focus on signal integrity, power distribution, thermal management, EMI/EMC mitigation, and mechanical constraints
  • Optimize layouts for manufacturability, testability, and long-term field reliability (vibration, shock, -40C to +85C operation)
  • Collaborate with external layout resources when needed, but personally own critical designs
  • Assemble, power-up, and debug first-article prototypes using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, thermal imaging, and environmental chambers
  • Identify and resolve hardware issues (noise, timing, power sequencing, thermal hotspots, etc.)
  • Support firmware integration and system-level validation on engine test stands
  • Work directly with systems engineers to refine requirements and architecture
  • Contribute to our component library, design guidelines, and DFx (design for excellence) processes
  • Participate in root-cause analysis for field returns and legacy product sustaining
  • Conduct design reviews
  • Communications protocols over hardware networks CAN, RS485, ETHERNET

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in embedded hardware design, with strong emphasis on schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Proficiency with EDA tools (KiCad preferred)
  • Solid understanding of analog/digital design, power electronics, high-speed signals, and EMI best practice
  • Experience bringing up and debugging complex prototypes in a lab environment
  • Familiarity with industrial/automotive-grade design practices (derating, conformal coating, wide-temp components)
  • Hands-on skills with lab equipment (scopes, multimeters, soldering stations, logic analyzers)
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline

Preferred Requirements:

  • Knowledge of engines and how they operate
  • Experience designing electronics for stationary engines, heavy equipment, or similar harsh-environment applications
  • Knowledge of industrial protocols (CAN/J1939, Modbus) and safety certifications (CSA, UL, IEC, ATEX)

Work Environment: This position operates in a professional office environment. Standard business hours apply, with flexibility to meet project deadlines as needed. We're an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.
