What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Altium PCB Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Altium PCB Designer, you need a solid understanding of electronic circuit theory, PCB layout principles, and experience with schematic capture, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with Altium Designer software and familiarity with related tools like simulation packages and manufacturing file generation are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication with engineers and manufacturers help ensure high-quality designs. These skills are vital for creating reliable, manufacturable PCBs that meet project specifications and industry standards.

What is the difference between Altium Pcb Design vs PCB Design Engineer?

AspectAltium Pcb DesignPCB Design Engineer
CredentialsProficiency in Altium Designer software, certifications optionalDegree in electronics, electrical engineering, or related field; software skills vary
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, electronics companies, freelanceElectronics manufacturing, R&D departments, consulting
Industry UsagePrimarily in electronics hardware design using Altium softwareBroader industry, may use various PCB CAD tools

Altium Pcb Design focuses on creating PCB layouts using Altium Designer software, often requiring specific software skills. PCB Design Engineer is a broader role that may involve multiple tools and a wider range of responsibilities in electronics development. Both roles are essential in electronics manufacturing but differ mainly in software expertise and scope.

What are some common challenges faced by Altium PCB Designers when collaborating with hardware and manufacturing teams?

Altium PCB Designers often work closely with hardware engineers and manufacturing teams to ensure that designs meet both functional and production requirements. A common challenge is managing design changes and communicating updates efficiently, as even minor modifications can impact manufacturability or performance. Additionally, designers must ensure that files and documentation are consistently maintained and compatible with manufacturing processes, which requires attention to detail and proactive communication. Building strong working relationships and utilizing Altium's collaboration features can help streamline these interactions and minimize errors.

What is Altium PCB Design?

Altium PCB Design refers to the process of creating printed circuit board (PCB) layouts using Altium Designer, a leading electronic design automation (EDA) software. Altium Designer allows engineers to design schematics, lay out PCB traces, and prepare manufacturing files for electronic circuits. The software provides advanced features like 3D visualization, rule checking, and integration with component libraries, making it popular for both simple and complex PCB projects. Professionals in this field are responsible for translating circuit diagrams into physical board layouts that can be manufactured and assembled.

Job description

Overview
PDF Solutions (NASDAQ: PDFS) is seeking a senior PCB Layout Engineer to join the R&D team focusing on developing a cutting-edge electron beam inspection tool (eProbe®). These tools are basically high-speed scanning electron microscopes (SEM) used at 300mm semiconductor wafer fabs to implement PDF's Design-for-Inspection (DFI) methodology used in yield ramp and manufacturing control.
As a Senior PCB Layout Engineer, the candidate will contribute to all phases of PCB design and production for our electron beam inspection tool (eProbe®). The candidate must bring versatile knowledge and experience of PCB design, PCB Fabrication, PCB quality control to a highly collaborative
Responsibilities
  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers to make industry leading printed circuit board (PCB) designs from prototyping to mass production using Altium Designer.
  • Design and develop layouts of analog/mixed-signal PCBs with consideration of electromagnetic interference (EMI), signal integrity (SI), and power integrity (PI), thermal management, etc.
  • Create PCB fabrication and assembly drawings with, for example, Altium Draftsman.
  • Define PCB design rules, design within manufacturing limits, create Altium outjobs, fabrication and assembly documentation and validate designs with DRC checks prior to release.
  • Collaborate with suppliers on PCB stackups, capabilities, and solving engineering issues.
  • Manage external ECAD resources as needed.
  • Write documents (such as rework instructions, fab/assembly notes, etc.), handle BOM, and perform ECOs.
  • Drive simultaneous development of multiple challenging, complex PCB designs to meet critical program deadlines.

Qualifications
  • BS/BA (or above) degree in Electrical Engineering, or and equivalent engineering field.
  • 5+ full-time years of experience using Altium Designer.
  • Experience in routing impedance-controlled nets, including differential pairs, per engineer's instructions and component specifications.
  • Strong skills in designing quality multi-layer, high density PCBs with careful consideration of analog, digital, high speed, low noise, and/or power circuits.
  • Demonstrated understanding of IPC, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Testability (DFT).
  • Knowledge of PCB design standards for common interfaces, such as I2C, SPI, Ethernet, etc.
  • Experience with best practices for system integration and layout verification including mating of multiple boards (pin 1 verification methods, system level high speed length matching) and mechanical interference checks.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: Altium Designer, Altium 365, Altium Concord Pro or Nexus, PCB ECAD Library creation and management.
  • Skills in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
