What is an Altium librarian?

Altium Librarians are professionals responsible for creating, managing, and maintaining libraries of electronic components within Altium Designer, a popular PCB design software. They ensure that schematic symbols, PCB footprints, and component metadata are accurate and up to date, which is essential for efficient and error-free PCB design. Altium Librarians also standardize component libraries according to company or industry standards, helping design teams streamline their workflow and minimize design errors.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an Altium librarian?

To thrive as an Altium Librarian, you need a strong background in electronics, PCB design, and library management, typically supported by relevant technical education or experience. Proficiency with Altium Designer software, component database systems, and version control tools is essential for efficient library creation and maintenance. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication help ensure accuracy and collaboration with design teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining reliable component libraries, preventing design errors, and streamlining the PCB development process.

What challenges do Altium librarians face when maintaining component libraries, and how can they be addressed?

Altium Librarians often encounter challenges such as ensuring data consistency across the library, managing frequent updates from component manufacturers, and maintaining compliance with organizational standards. Staying organized by implementing systematic version control and thorough documentation can help address these issues. Additionally, collaborating closely with design engineers and procurement teams is essential to ensure that library components meet both technical and sourcing requirements, reducing the likelihood of design errors or obsolete parts.

What is the difference between Altium Librarian vs PCB Designer?

Job description

Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you've come to the right place!

E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service deliveryย associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems.

We're intentional, we're unapologetically curious and we're 100% committed to innovate space-based communications and deliver actionable intelligence that will expand global economies, protect space and our planet and enhance our overall quality of life.

We are seeking a hands-onย PCB Design Engineerย with deep expertise in schematic capture and PCB layout usingย Altium Designer. This role focuses on high-quality board design execution, robust system integration, and Design for Excellence (DFX)-this is not an RF/circuit design role, but RF/circuit experience is nice to have.

The ideal candidate is fluent in translating complex system requirements into production-ready, high-layer-count schematics and layouts for digital and mixed-signal systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • End-to-End Design Ownership:ย Own the entire PCB lifecycle from initial concept and schematic capture through layout, routing, and manufacturing release.
  • Altium Execution:ย Develop and maintain complex multi-layer PCB layouts and schematics within Altium Designer.
  • Signal & Power Integrity:ย Design multi-layer boards with strict adherence to high-speed signal integrity, robust power distribution networks (PDN), and proper grounding strategies.
  • Documentation & NPI:ย Generate complete fabrication and assembly packages, including Gerber/ODB++ files, BOMs, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:ย Partner closely with hardware, FPGA, firmware, and mechanical engineering teams to seamlessly integrate system constraints.
  • Vendor Management:ย Coordinate directly with fabrication and assembly vendors to proactively resolve DFM/DFT issues.
  • Library & Revisions:ย Manage component selection, maintain the ECAD library, and support board bring-up, debugging, and iterative design revisions.
Required Qualifications
  • Altium Mastery:ย Proven, hands-on experience with advanced PCB layout and schematic capture specifically inย Altium Designer.
  • Complex Board Design:ย Experience successfully designing high-layer-count (e.g., 6+ layers), high-density digital and mixed-signal boards.
  • Hardware Fundamentals:ย Deep understanding of stack-up planning, high-speed routing practices, differential pair routing, and impedance control.
  • EMI/EMC & Power:ย Strong grasp of EMI/EMC-aware layout techniques, power distribution, and decoupling strategies.
  • Manufacturability:ย Solid familiarity with PCB fabrication processes, assembly constraints, and DFM guidelines.
  • Autonomy:ย Ability to work independently, manage tight deadlines, and navigate multiple concurrent board revisions.
Nice to Have (Preferred Skills)
  • Experience routing high-speed interfaces (e.g.,ย DDR4/5, PCIe, JESD204, Ethernet, or multi-gigabit serial links).
  • Experience working withย FPGA-based architecturesย and complex pin-swapping/constraints.
  • Familiarity with thermal management strategies and tight mechanical/enclosure integration.
  • Exposure to embedded systems architecture and localized DC-DC power supply layouts
Additional Requirements
This is a fast-paced, high-impact environment - flexibility to occasionally work extended hours or weekends during critical periods is expected.
This is a full time, exempt position, based out of our Saratoga office.ย  The target base pay for this position is $130,000 - $200,000 annually.ย  The total compensation packaged will be determined by various factors such as your relevant job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.ย
ย
We are redefining how satellites are designed, manufactured and used-so we're looking for candidates with passion, deep knowledge and direct experience on LEO satellite component development, design and in-orbit activities. If that's your experience - then we'll be immediately wow-ed.
ย
E-Space is not currently able to provide employment sponsorship for candidates who do not hold work authorization for the location of this role.ย ย

Why E-Space is right for you:

As a member of our team, you will play a crucial role in driving our success.ย  Our team members have a strong sense of dedication and responsibility; this includes a strong commitment to our mission to create an entirely new suite of global capabilities to improve lives, business efficiencies and build a smarter planet.
