What are the typical responsibilities of an Alternate Facility Security Officer (FSO) during the absence of the primary FSO?

As an Alternate FSO, you will step in to ensure the organization remains compliant with federal security regulations whenever the primary FSO is unavailable. This includes overseeing security clearances, conducting security briefings, maintaining security records, and addressing any immediate security incidents or concerns. You will also be expected to collaborate with other departments, such as HR and IT, to uphold security protocols and support ongoing security training. Strong communication and attention to detail are essential since you will be the point of contact for security matters in the FSO's absence.

What is an Alternate FSO?

An Alternate Facility Security Officer (Alternate FSO) is a designated individual who assists the Facility Security Officer in managing and implementing a facility's security program, particularly in organizations that handle classified information for the U.S. government. The Alternate FSO steps in when the primary FSO is unavailable, ensuring that all security procedures and compliance measures are maintained. This role often requires specialized training and clearance, as well as familiarity with the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM).
