What is an Allegro PCB designer?

Allegro PCB Designers are professionals who use Cadence Allegro PCB design software to create printed circuit board (PCB) layouts for electronic devices. They are responsible for transforming electrical schematics into physical board designs, ensuring signal integrity, manufacturability, and compliance with industry standards. Their work involves component placement, routing, and collaboration with engineers to optimize board performance. Allegro PCB Designers play a crucial role in the development of electronic products across various industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Allegro PCB designer?

To thrive as an Allegro PCB Designer, you need strong knowledge of electronic circuit design, PCB layout principles, and experience with CAD tools, typically backed by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in Cadence Allegro PCB Design software, familiarity with industry standards (such as IPC), and understanding of signal integrity analysis tools are crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with engineering teams are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of manufacturable, reliable, and high-performance PCB designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by Allegro PCB designers when collaborating with hardware engineers and manufacturers?

Allegro PCB Designers often face challenges in translating hardware engineers' conceptual requirements into manufacturable designs, especially when dealing with complex, high-density layouts. Communication gaps can arise when clarifying component placements, layer stack-ups, or design rule constraints, which requires proactive collaboration and regular design reviews. Additionally, ensuring that the final design files meet the specific requirements of manufacturing partners—such as DFM (Design for Manufacturability) checks—demands attention to detail and adaptability in workflow. Building strong relationships with both engineering and manufacturing teams helps streamline the process and reduces the risk of costly design iterations.

What is the difference between Allegro Pcb Designer vs OrCAD PCB Designer?

AspectAllegro Pcb DesignerOrCAD PCB Designer
Primary UseHigh-speed, complex PCB design for large-scale projectsSmaller to medium-sized PCB designs, more accessible for beginners
FeaturesAdvanced routing, signal integrity, and manufacturing outputsBasic routing, schematic capture, and design rule checks
Work EnvironmentProfessional electronics design firms, large manufacturersEducational institutions, small companies, hobbyists
CertificationsOften used with industry standards like IPC, ISOLess formal certifications, more user-friendly

Allegro Pcb Designer is suited for complex, high-speed PCB projects in professional environments, while OrCAD PCB Designer offers a more accessible option for smaller-scale or educational use. Both tools are used in the electronics industry but serve different project sizes and expertise levels.

Job description

SEL is seeking a PCB Designer to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment designing printed circuit boards for high-reliability applications. In this role, you will contribute to the full PCB design lifecycle, partnering closely with engineers to create manufacturable, testable, and robust designs that meet demanding performance and quality requirements.
If you are an innovative, detail-oriented designer who thrives on solving complex layout challenges and delivering high-quality designs, this position is for you.
As a PCB Designer, a typical day might include the following:
  • Design and develop PCB layouts from schematics under the mentorship of experienced Designers and Engineers.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers to translate schematic intent into reliable PCB designs.
  • Schedule and lead design review meetings for assigned projects, incorporating feedback and driving design improvements.
  • Apply engineering change orders (ECOs) to PCB layouts and associated documentation.
  • Perform component placement, routing, and design rule implementation with attention to signal integrity, power integrity, and manufacturability.
  • Perform Layout based simulations.
  • Generate fabrication and assembly documentation (Gerbers, drawings, BOMs) to support manufacturing.
  • Support PCB fabrication, assembly, and test by working with internal teams and external vendors to resolve design issues.
  • Adhere to and help maintain PCB design standards and IPC guidelines.

This job might be for you if:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering discipline, OR equivalent professional experience
  • Experience with CAD tools (such as Allegro, Xpedition, Altium, Solidworks, or similar CAD platforms).
  • Experience creating and managing ECAD libraries (symbols, footprints, and components).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple designs and deadlines.
  • Value to provide unmatched customer service.

What Sets This Role Apart:
  • Opportunity to work on complex, high variety, high-reliability products.
  • Involvement across the design development lifecycle.
  • Collaboration with highly skilled engineering teams on challenging technical problems.
