A Brief Summary of This Position:

This position is responsible for the supervision and direction of the site welding team. The incumbent works with suppliers, customers, and site leadership to identify, research, and develop welding and process improvement plans. The incumbent is responsible for regularly reviewing site-welding metrics and using root cause analysis and corrective actions to improve welding operations. The incumbent is responsible for managing and storing site welding records and documents per applicable quality procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Reports to the Sr. Plant Manager, and dotted line into the Welding Management Team. The position also interfaces regularly with Operations, Quality, ME, IE, and Safety teams.
  • Manages the site level welding team - typically the weld instructor & technician(s)
  • Attends daily production meetings to ensure welding KPI's are met & sustained
  • The ability to travel up to 20% of the time, locally
  • A strong working knowledge of AWS Codes D1.1, D1.2, D1.4, and D1.5, & CSA standards
  • Writes, reviews, approves, and controls welding procedures, work instructions, and other welding documents
  • Interviews welding candidates and determines skill level through evaluation process
  • Incumbent provides one-on-one coaching and training support to new and existing welding staff
  • Assists with Qualification & Training of Welding personnel and associated recordkeeping
  • Provides technical support for customer concerns, third party audits, and site concerns
  • Analyzes QA reports and performs root cause analysis and corrective actions for welding processes
  • Performs process audits to ensure compliance & performance
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Monitors and reduces usage of welding consumables through process improvement
  • Ensures all welding equipment meets compliance standards
  • Knowledge of and experience with the following welding processes:
    • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
    • Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW)
    • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
    • Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
    • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) - When Applicable
    • Hybrid Laser Arc Welding (HLAW) - When applicable
    • High Frequency Resistance Welding (HFRW) - When Applicable
    • Oxyfuel & Plasma, and Laser cutting

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelors with 6+ years relevant experience or associate's degree with 8+ years relevant experience or 10+ years of relevant experience
  • The ability to obtain Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Certified Welding Educator (CWE), and Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS) accreditations
  • Previous training experience
  • The ability to read, write, and communicate clearly and effectively
  • The ability to speak and instruct large and small groups, in multiple settings, such as a classroom or shop floor
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety through excellent safety practices and behaviors, conforming to all Valmont safety policies and procedures
  • Strong Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access)

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience in a leadership role
  • The ability to obtain Welding Supervisor accreditation from the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB)

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an industrial shop setting. The incumbent is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone in personal conversations or meetings.The environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.Limited travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the shop. The employee is frequently required to move about the shop and site. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards when performing manual tasks such as welding. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, with the most frequent lift up to 20 pounds, in working with materials and equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Working conditions may include abnormal temperatures including heat, cold, rain, snow and ice. Employee may also be exposed to jarring and bouncing, high noise areas, and other job related hazards.Employees are required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the position.
