What is an alignment technician?

Alignment Technicians are skilled professionals responsible for inspecting, adjusting, and repairing vehicle suspension and steering systems to ensure proper wheel alignment. Their work helps improve vehicle safety, handling, and tire longevity. They use specialized equipment to measure and correct alignment angles according to manufacturer specifications. Alignment Technicians often work in automotive repair shops, dealerships, or tire service centers, and may also perform related maintenance tasks such as tire balancing and rotation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an alignment technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Alignment Technician, you need a solid understanding of automotive mechanics, suspension systems, and wheel alignment principles, often supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with computerized alignment machines, diagnostic tools, and manufacturer-specific software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong customer service skills help technicians excel in diagnosing and correcting vehicle alignment issues. These skills ensure precise, safe vehicle repairs and contribute to customer satisfaction and safety on the road.

What are some common challenges alignment technicians face when working with newer vehicle models?

Alignment Technicians often encounter challenges with newer vehicle models due to the integration of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and complex suspension designs. These vehicles may require specialized alignment equipment and up-to-date training to ensure proper calibration and avoid affecting safety features. Technicians must stay current with manufacturer guidelines and may need to collaborate closely with diagnostic specialists. Embracing ongoing training and adapting to evolving technologies are key to success in this role.

About Mavis Tire, in their own words

From Mavis Tire

What began as Vic’s Cycle Shop in 1949 - a humble bike repair stand in Westchester County, New York - grew into a small chain of tire shops. In 1972, that local enterprise was rebranded as Mavis Tire Supply (inspired by its founders, Marion + Victor Sorbaro), becoming one of New York’s first multi-brand tire dealers. Through the 1970s and ’80s, Mavis was focused on delivering value-oriented service, and expanding carefully across the Northeast under the Sorbaro family’s leadership.

In 2018, Mavis Tire Supply merged with Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers and Brakes Plus to create a new national automotive care platform. The resulting company, Mavis Tire Express Services Corp., known as Mavis, continued to deliver value-oriented, best-in-class service and marked the beginning of a new phase of accelerated growth.

Today, Mavis is a national leader in tire and automotive services, boasting a family of brands which include Mavis Discount Tire, Mavis Tires & Brakes, Midas, Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers, Brakes Plus, Tire Kingdom, NTB (National Tire & Battery), Town Fair Tire, and Tuffy. From tires, oil changes, brakes, alignments, and batteries, to suspensions, exhaust work, and state inspections, we deliver it all with the same honest, community-first service that we’ve been known for since 1949. With more than 3,500 owned and franchised retail locations across the U.S. and Canada, Mavis serves millions of drivers each year, with a commitment to dependability, safety, convenience, and value.
