Alignment Engineer information

What does an alignment engineer do?

An Alignment Engineer specializes in ensuring that machines, equipment, or systems are properly aligned for optimal performance and safety. Their work often involves using precision instruments to adjust and calibrate components in manufacturing, automotive, or aerospace industries. They analyze technical drawings, diagnose misalignment issues, and implement corrective measures to maintain efficiency and reduce wear and tear. Alignment Engineers play a crucial role in minimizing downtime and extending the lifespan of critical equipment.

What are some common challenges faced by alignment engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Alignment Engineers often work closely with teams such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure precise alignment of equipment and systems. A common challenge is communicating highly technical alignment specifications to colleagues with varying levels of technical expertise. Additionally, balancing the need for exact tolerances with project timelines and cost constraints can require creative problem-solving. Effective collaboration, clear documentation, and adaptability are key to successfully overcoming these obstacles and ensuring project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an alignment engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Alignment Engineer, you need a solid understanding of physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, often supported by a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. Familiarity with precision measurement tools, laser alignment systems, CAD software, and relevant industry certifications is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively and ensure accurate system alignment. These skills are crucial for maintaining high-performance standards, minimizing downtime, and ensuring the reliability of complex machinery or systems.

What is the difference between Alignment Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectAlignment EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in precision alignment or related fieldsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, aerospace, automotiveFactories, design labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D centers
Industry UsageUsed in industries requiring precise equipment alignment, such as aerospace and automotiveUsed across various industries for product design, manufacturing, and systems development

Alignment Engineers focus on precise equipment and system alignment to ensure optimal performance, often working in specialized industrial environments. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, designing and analyzing mechanical systems across multiple industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Alignment Engineers typically need specific training in alignment techniques, whereas Mechanical Engineers have a more general engineering background.

Job Description:

Role Summary

As a Software Engineer I, you develop and maintain technical solutions for EDMO Data Catalog services, ensuring adherence to engineering and architectural design principles while meeting business requirements. You build and support defined components within cloud-enabled solutions, applying documented infrastructure, deployment and architecture patterns with guidance from senior engineers. You work on defined features, components, enhancements and break / fix work under the guidance of senior engineers and technical leads.

You contribute to the full delivery lifecycle by analysing requirements, building quality code, performing unit and component testing, supporting peer reviews and participating in production support. You are expected to apply enterprise standards for security, reliability, scalability and maintainability while growing your knowledge of the platform and business domain.

You use AI-assisted engineering tools only within approved guidance, treating generated outputs as drafts that must be tested, reviewed and validated before use.

Key Outcomes
  • Defined features, components and enhancements are delivered on time and aligned to documented requirements and architecture standards.
  • Code is maintainable, tested and consistent with team standards, with defects identified and resolved early in the delivery cycle.
  • Assigned features and components are implemented in alignment with documented cloud, infrastructure, security and scalability patterns.
  • Technical documentation, test evidence and implementation notes are clear enough to support handoff, operations and future maintenance.
  • Incidents, defects and support requests are analysed with appropriate urgency and escalated when risks or blockers emerge.
  • Knowledge of the business domain, platform and engineering practices grows through hands-on delivery and active participation in the team.
Customer
  • Develop new solutions, features and components for assigned engineering programs and platform initiatives.
  • Develop and test assigned components within approved cloud-enabled architecture and deployment patterns.
  • Perform unit and component testing for new application development aligned to business needs and technology architecture standards.
  • Support business enquiries, small enhancements and break / fix implementations, including source code changes where required.
  • Work with technology partners to ensure configuration and custom components meet application requirements and performance goals.
  • Analyze technical requirements for assigned work and recommend pragmatic engineering solutions with guidance from senior team members.
  • Document and verify system components, applications, system infrastructure, security, integration and operability designs associated with assigned work.
AI Workflow Innovation & Governance
  • Use approved AI-assisted development tools for defined tasks such as code suggestions, test scaffolding, documentation drafts and refactoring support.
  • Validate generated outputs through unit tests, peer review, secure coding checks and comparison against requirements before relying on them.
  • Never use sensitive or restricted information in AI prompts unless explicitly approved by policy and project guidance.
  • Capture useful examples or issues encountered with AI tools and share them with the team to improve safe, repeatable practices.
Shareholder
  • Adhere to enterprise frameworks, methodologies, secure coding practices and project delivery standards relevant to software engineering.
  • Deliver effective and efficient solutions that meet key project milestones and quality expectations within assigned scope.
  • Comply with defined technology delivery practices, including documentation of system requirements, estimates and implementation details as required.
  • Identify risks, defects, blockers and non-standard activities early, and escalate appropriately.
  • Support continuous improvement and automation opportunities within the engineering practice.
Employee / Team
  • Participate fully as a member of the team, supporting a positive work environment that promotes service, quality, innovation and teamwork.
  • Provide thought leadership appropriate to level by contributing ideas, sharing technical learnings and participating in knowledge transfer.
  • Keep current on emerging tools, techniques and practices relevant to assigned technology areas.
  • Keep others informed about status, progress, issues and useful delivery information.
  • Provide support to peers through code reviews, documentation, testing assistance and knowledge sharing as appropriate.
Breadth & Depth
  • Foundational knowledge of a specific domain or engineering frameworks, technologies, tools, processes and procedures.
  • Performs medium to moderately complex technical tasks under general supervision.
  • Develops program specifications; adapts, integrates, codes, tests and debugs programs; and is responsible for execution within assigned scope.
