Alignment Engineer information

What does an Alignment Engineer do?

An Alignment Engineer specializes in ensuring that machines, equipment, or systems are properly aligned for optimal performance and safety. Their work often involves using precision instruments to adjust and calibrate components in manufacturing, automotive, or aerospace industries. They analyze technical drawings, diagnose misalignment issues, and implement corrective measures to maintain efficiency and reduce wear and tear. Alignment Engineers play a crucial role in minimizing downtime and extending the lifespan of critical equipment.

What are some common challenges faced by Alignment Engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Alignment Engineers often work closely with teams such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure precise alignment of equipment and systems. A common challenge is communicating highly technical alignment specifications to colleagues with varying levels of technical expertise. Additionally, balancing the need for exact tolerances with project timelines and cost constraints can require creative problem-solving. Effective collaboration, clear documentation, and adaptability are key to successfully overcoming these obstacles and ensuring project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Alignment Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Alignment Engineer, you need a solid understanding of physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, often supported by a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. Familiarity with precision measurement tools, laser alignment systems, CAD software, and relevant industry certifications is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively and ensure accurate system alignment. These skills are crucial for maintaining high-performance standards, minimizing downtime, and ensuring the reliability of complex machinery or systems.

What is the difference between Alignment Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectAlignment EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in precision alignment or related fieldsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, aerospace, automotiveFactories, design labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D centers
Industry UsageUsed in industries requiring precise equipment alignment, such as aerospace and automotiveUsed across various industries for product design, manufacturing, and systems development

Alignment Engineers focus on precise equipment and system alignment to ensure optimal performance, often working in specialized industrial environments. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, designing and analyzing mechanical systems across multiple industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Alignment Engineers typically need specific training in alignment techniques, whereas Mechanical Engineers have a more general engineering background.

Job description

About us:
Aeva's mission is to bring the next wave of perception to a broad range of applications from automated driving to industrial robotics, consumer electronics, consumer health, security, and beyond. Aeva is transforming autonomy with its groundbreaking sensing and perception technology that integrates all key LiDAR components onto a silicon photonics chip in a compact module. Aeva 4D LiDAR sensors uniquely detect instant velocity in addition to 3D position, allowing autonomous devices like vehicles and robots to make more intelligent and safe decisions.
Role Overview:
Aeva is seeking to hire a talented and motivated NPI Alignment Engineer to work closely with our design teams and contract manufacturers in developing precision optoelectronic alignment equipment. This person should have in-depth experience in micro-optic assembly techniques and equipment with a heavy emphasis on active alignment.
What you will be doing
  • Development from concept to production release of in-house and outsourced active alignment equipment
  • Work remotely and on-site with active alignment equipment manufacturers to solve equipment hardware and process related issues
  • Oversee failure analysis of process and assembly related issues
  • Source and buy-off active alignment required for production
  • Provide DFM feedback to the engineering team and own process related design decisions as related to active alignment

What will you have
  • 3-5 years experience developing custom designed optoelectronic active alignment equipment and alignment processes
  • Hands-on experience developing and debugging active aligner hardware and processes
  • Hands-on experience creating and modifying alignment sequences in custom equipment GUIs
  • Experience optimizing processes for cycle time, yield, and performance
  • A strong understanding and comfort of geometric optics and mechanical alignment hardware
  • Experience specifying and developing original alignment techniques and algorithms
  • Experience with automation hardware using precision stages, automated dispensing, and pneumatics
  • Strong knowledge of epoxies used for active alignment
  • Years of accumulated knowledge of working with equipment suppliers and contract manufacturers
  • Excellent project management and communication skills
  • Willingness for extended international travel

Nice to have
  • Experience with working in an R&D environment while also meeting deadlines in a production schedule
  • Experience writing scripts in languages like Python, Matlab, Labview, or C++
  • Experience analyzing large alignment datasets using software such as Python, R, JMP, or similar
  • Strong Solidworks experience
  • Experience designing precision mechanical parts and assemblies

What's in it for you
  • Be part of a fast paced and dynamic team
  • Very competitive compensation and meaningful stock grants
  • Exceptional benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, and more
  • Unlimited PTO: We care about results, not punching timecards

$132,400 - $179,200 a year
Salary pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate's starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, certifications, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges are subject to change in the future.
Depending on the position offered, equity, bonus, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, pre-tax commuter and health care/dependent care accounts, 401k plan, life and disability benefits, flexible time off, paid parental leave, and 11 paid holidays annually.
