About the Role:

As a Systems Design Engineer on our Implantable Systems team, you'll play a crucial role in developing innovative products for the Active Implantable Systems R&D team. Join our experienced design team to collaborate on cutting-edge technologies and engage in a wide range of activities, including:

    • Collaborating with leadership and marketing on product definitions and system architecture.
    • Developing complex electromechanical systems, including embedded systems, sensors, and algorithms, with cross-functional teams of hardware engineers, software engineers, and research scientists.
    • Supporting Regulatory submissions and approvals through delivery of design documentation.
    • Interfacing with Technical Services, Sales, and customers on product design and functionality.

Your responsibilities will include: 

You will be responsible for completing system engineering activities, from early phase development to market release. Your key tasks will include:

    • Executing multiple systems engineering activities such as requirements definition and decomposition, system architecture design and design documentation, throughout the product development life cycle.
    • Applying critical thinking skills to solve complex systems interaction problems.
    • Providing expertise in multiple roles in the product development life cycle, showcasing deep knowledge of system functionality.
    • Advising project management and technical leadership on key product risk/benefit trade-offs.
    • Influencing cross-functional peers to make timely decisions and recommendations for project success.
    • Representing the Systems Engineering organization as the technical contact for assigned features, tools, or subject matters.
    • Providing input for submissions to regulatory bodies and governmental agencies.
    • Developing and supporting battery management for active implantable devices, including battery requirements and characterization, usage modeling, power budgeting, longevity prediction algorithms, replacement indicators, and field performance analysis.
    • Collaborating with device electrical, firmware, software, and verification teams to develop, integrate, and validate battery management algorithms and features.
    • Collaborating with battery suppliers to define battery requirements and characterize battery performance through modeling, accelerated testing, and real-time verification.

Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering or related field with 5-7 years of experience.
    • Strong written and verbal communication, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
    • Ability to build effective relationships across the organization and with external stakeholders.
    • Demonstrated working knowledge of systems engineering principles, requirements management, and external regulations.
    • Experience with requirement management tools and/or product line engineering tools.
    • Leadership skills with the capability to make trade-offs between risks, benefits, and performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in the medical/diagnostics space.
    • Understanding and experience in the design, development, and testing of embedded, electro-mechanical medical devices.
    • Experience in product concept development, customer interaction, verification of engineering requirements, and validation of customer needs/design requirements.
    • Practical knowledge of project management concepts and experience with Agile concepts, including scrums, burnups, retrospectives, backlog and minimizing WIP.
    • Understanding of architecture principles such as subsystem roles and responsibilities, interfaces, resource allocation and utilization, especially as applied to embedded systems.
    • Experience with computer-based modeling notations and tools.
    • Experience developing active implantable medical device battery management systems, power electronics, battery characterization, and longevity modeling.
