This role is part of Alcon's Engineering function, a team focused on improving quality, processes, products, packaging and materials across our business to help deliver brilliant outcomes.
The Controls Shift Engineer (Science/Tech/Engineering Path) is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining automation and control systems, with a strong focus on mathematical modeling and control theory. This role requires making critical decisions within assigned project areas and applying advanced technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to support operational excellence.
Specifics Include:
  • Lead and execute complex tasks related to the design, development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of instrumentation, electrical, and automation control systems
  • Design and support automation control systems across a diverse range of manufacturing and engineering applications
  • Apply mathematical modeling and analyze system dynamics to develop effective control strategies that ensure desired system performance
  • Utilize control theory and advanced engineering principles to optimize system reliability, efficiency, and performance
  • Support and enhance manufacturing operations through automation design, system configuration, and technical troubleshooting
  • Contribute to complex engineering projects, making decisions that significantly influence outcomes and system performance
  • Continuously evaluate and implement advancements in automation, controls, and system design technologies
  • Ensure compliance with GxP regulations by following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintaining accurate documentation, and adhering to quality standards
  • Support organizational compliance and continuous improvement initiatives through adherence to regulatory requirements and best practices

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO ALCON:
  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +8 yrs; Assoc.+4 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • Work hours: 36 - 48 hours per week: 6:00 PM EST - 6:00 AM EST, 12-hour rotating night shift: 2 nights on, 2 nights off, and every other weekend (Though rare, day shift availability is possible based on business needs and individual qualifications)
  • Travel Required: 0 - 5%
  • Location: Onsite
  • Sponsorship & Relocation Not Available

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience in Mechatronics
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with Beckhoff / TwinCAT systems
  • Proficiency in Structured Text programming language
  • Experience with PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)
