Job Description:
Job Summary
The Blaster in Charge will oversee project activities related to blasting operations. The ideal candidate will be responsible for onsite coordination of equipment and personnel including blasting equipment, blast specialist, and blast crew to ensure the project's quality, time, budget and safety requirements are met while maintaining a communication with other onsite supervisors and the owner's representatives. This position will play a pivotal role in the success of both the project and the organization, serving as a frontline manager based in Cooper Landing, Alaska.
Specific knowledge relating to explosives handling and storage, blasting practices, and blast design will be required.
Main Responsibilities
  • Directly supervise blasting operations.
  • Collaborate with other onsite supervision and the owner's representative.
  • Interface regularly with the Owner's Representative and the Blasting Consultant to address matters related to blasting.
  • Implement safety protocols and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements related to blasting activities.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of blasting operations, making adjustments as necessary to optimize production.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports on production, quality control, and safety activities.
  • Must be able to work Saturdays and Sundays. Typical weekly work hours can meet or exceed 60 hours.
  • Develop and mentor direct reports.

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interface with engineers, consultants, and field personnel.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Relevant certifications in blasting operations and safety (e.g., Alaska Department of Labor Explosives Handler Certificate of Fitness) preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of blasting experience utilizing controlled blasting techniques.
  • Minimum 5 years of specialized experience with presplitting techniques, including precision presplitting, in mixed rock types similar to the bedrock strata present at the project site.
  • Minimum experience as the Blaster in Charge from start to finish on at least two rock excavation projects requiring 100,000 linear feet of controlled blasting each project with no claims to the owner.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to pass drug screening and a PAT (physical abilities test).
