What is an Akam?

Akam refers to a genre of classical Tamil poetry that focuses on themes of love and personal life. Originating from ancient Sangam literature, Akam poems explore the emotions, relationships, and experiences of individuals, often using natural imagery and metaphors. These poems contrast with 'Puram' poetry, which deals with public life, war, and heroism. Akam poetry is considered a vital part of Tamil literary tradition and provides insight into the culture and values of early Tamil society.
