Airflow Developer information

What is an Airflow developer?

Airflow Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data workflows using Apache Airflow, an open-source platform for orchestrating complex computational workflows and data processing pipelines. They are responsible for writing, scheduling, and monitoring tasks (DAGs) that automate data movement and transformation across systems. Airflow Developers work closely with data engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure reliable and efficient data pipeline automation. Their expertise includes Python programming, Airflow configuration, troubleshooting, and best practices for scalable workflow management.

What is the difference between Airflow Developer vs Data Engineer?

AspectAirflow DeveloperData Engineer
Required CredentialsKnowledge of Apache Airflow, Python, SQLData modeling, SQL, Python, cloud platforms
Work EnvironmentFocus on workflow orchestration, automationData pipeline development, storage, processing
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare for workflow automationBroad industries for data infrastructure

While both roles involve working with data and Python, an Airflow Developer specializes in designing and maintaining workflow automation using Apache Airflow. In contrast, a Data Engineer builds and manages data pipelines and infrastructure across various tools and platforms. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope and focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Airflow developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Airflow Developer, you need strong programming skills in Python, experience with data pipelines, and a solid understanding of workflow orchestration concepts. Familiarity with Apache Airflow, cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), and version control systems such as Git are typically required, along with knowledge of containerization tools like Docker. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills for collaborating with data teams and troubleshooting complex workflows. These competencies ensure reliable, scalable, and maintainable data pipeline solutions that support organizational data needs.

What are some common challenges Airflow developers face when managing complex data pipelines, and how can these be addressed?

Airflow Developers often encounter challenges such as managing dependencies between tasks, handling large-scale workflows, and ensuring reliable pipeline execution. To address these, it's essential to design modular DAGs (Directed Acyclic Graphs), implement robust error handling, and use features like sensors and retries strategically. Collaboration with data engineers and stakeholders is also key for troubleshooting and optimizing workflows. Effective monitoring and logging practices further help in quickly identifying and resolving issues.

Job description

About Oshkosh AeroTech

Oshkosh AeroTech is a leading provider of aviation ground support products, gate equipment and airport services to commercial airlines, airports, airโ€‘freight carriers, ground handling and military customers. We own many of the most trusted brands in the air transportation industry, including LEKTROยฎ, JetAireยฎ, JetPowerยฎ, AmpTek, Jetwayยฎ and more.

Chief Engineer (NPD Defense)

The Chief Engineer leads and manages a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on the development, integration, and support of defense and military product lines. The role drives new product development with a strong emphasis on mechanical engineering excellence, system integration, and technical leadership. It sits at the intersection of leadership and deep technical expertise, functioning as a combined people leader and technical lead or evolving into a highly technical chief/principal engineer role.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop an engineering team consisting of engineers, designers, and technicians, scaling or restructuring based on future organizational design.
  • Provide both technical leadership and people leadership, balancing systemโ€‘level engineering guidance with team development, accountability, and performance management.
  • Collaborate on the development and execution of engineering strategy across defenseโ€‘focused product lines, including new product development and legacy product support with Product Management.
  • Lead the continued development and expansion of key defense products while supporting the transition away from lowโ€‘volume legacy programs.
  • Establish and reinforce strong mechanical engineering practices, including form, fit, function, system packaging, and overall design integrity.
  • Guide systemโ€‘level design across integrated mechanical, thermal, and power systems, including mobile HVAC systems (compressors, condensers, evaporators, thermal calculations), airflow and pressurization requirements (aircraft cooling applications and air start), and power generation/delivery systems requiring stable, controlled voltage outputs.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, controls, and software engineers to ensure full system integration across multidisciplinary domains.
  • Support and influence the evolution of organizational structure, including the separation of new product development and sustaining engineering workstreams.
  • Ensure engineering work aligns with military and defense program requirements, including MILโ€‘SPEC compliance, firstโ€‘article inspections, and documentation standards.
  • Partner with program management and crossโ€‘functional teams to ensure alignment on project execution and technical requirements.
  • Serve as a key technical decisionโ€‘maker influencing product direction, architecture, and adoption of new technologies.
  • Act as a technical advisor and mentor across the engineering organization.
  • Interface with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and product line strategy, including understanding business performance and P&L considerations.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, development methodologies, and system integration approaches to local and Oshkosh policies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Accredited Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering or related field with ten (10) or more years of related experience.
  • Exposure to both new product development and sustaining engineering environments.
  • Experience working in crossโ€‘functional teams including controls, electrical, and software engineering.
Standout Qualifications
  • Accredited Masterโ€™s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong mechanical engineering background with emphasis on systemโ€‘level design rather than pure CAD execution.
  • Experience with mobile HVAC systems, thermal management, or air handling systems in industrial or heavy equipment environments.
  • Understanding of integrated power and air systems, including voltage regulation and system stability requirements.
  • Experience working on defense or military programs, including familiarity with MILโ€‘SPEC standards and compliance documentation.
  • Familiarity with Siemens NX and Teamcenter or similar PLM/CAD systems.
  • Strong business acumen, including exposure to product strategy, cost management, or P&L considerations.
Core Competencies

Internal Contacts โ€“ Frequent interaction with engineering leadership, crossโ€‘functional teams, and program stakeholders.
External Contacts โ€“ Regular interaction with customers, suppliers, and external partners.
Communication Skills โ€“ Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and nonโ€‘technical audiences.
Decisionโ€‘Making โ€“ Significant responsibility for highโ€‘impact technical and organizational decisions.
Complexity, Judgment and Problem Solving โ€“ Ability to operate in a dynamic environment with evolving organizational structure and competing priorities.
Supervisory/Managerial โ€“ May include direct leadership responsibilities depending on final role structure.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands โ€“ Frequent: Standing, Walking, Sitting, Reaching, Hearing, Talking, Visual, Typing. Occasional: Driving, Fine Dexterity, Manual Dexterity. Seldom: Lifting/Carrying 25 lbs., Pushing/Pulling 25 lbs.
