What is an aircraft quality control inspector?
As an aircraft quality control inspector, your job is to conduct inspections of systems and components on aircraft of various sizes. To accomplish this, you use manuals and checklists provided by manufacturers or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to test components before, during, and after repairs and maintenance. You may also conduct functional checks to determine what needs maintenance, ensure all repair work is in compliance with safety standards, and calibrate inspection tools to the correct standards. When not inspecting aircraft, you spend time examining the repair environment to ensure it's safe for the workers. Aircraft quality control inspectors frequently work with other safety personnel and mechanics and occasionally report to manufacturers or the FAA when new problems are detected.
What is the difference between Aircraft Quality Control Inspector vs Aircraft Maintenance Technician?
| Aspect | Aircraft Quality Control Inspector | Aircraft Maintenance Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) license, quality assurance certifications | FAA A&P license, specialized maintenance certifications |
| Work Environment | Inspection facilities, hangars, manufacturing plants | Aircraft hangars, repair stations, maintenance shops |
| Primary Responsibilities | Inspect and verify aircraft parts and assemblies meet standards | Perform repairs, maintenance, and troubleshooting on aircraft |
| Industry Usage | Manufacturers, airlines, maintenance providers | Airlines, repair stations, maintenance companies |
While both roles require FAA certifications and work in aviation environments, Aircraft Quality Control Inspectors focus on inspecting and ensuring compliance with standards, whereas Aircraft Maintenance Technicians perform hands-on repairs and maintenance. Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path in aviation maintenance and quality assurance.

- Operates CMM to support manufacturing in-process first piece, internal inspection points, and customer-required first article inspection (FAI); completes FAI to AS9102 standards, customer requirements, and company procedures
- Inspects complex machined fixtures and parts using advanced measuring and layout instruments and equipment
- Participates in design reviews on cross-functional teams to ensure that conformance to specifications, inspectability, reliability, and quality system objectives are met; provides technical support for manufacturing operations to ensure part quality
- May assist engineering with the qualification and validation of new or changed tooling or parts
- Interprets drawings featuring Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T) to identify product inspection requirements
- Generates inspection reports; analyzes inspection reports to determine adherence to drawings, specifications, and processing procedures; Initiates nonconformance records and disposition of parts not meeting requirements
- Prepare detailed inspection documentation, such as written descriptions of inspection results, including deviations from engineering specifications
- Communicates effectively and professionally with internal and external personnel to identify root causes, troubleshoot and address errors and trends, and negotiate the resolution of non-conforming parts and necessary rework or re-inspection
