What is an aircraft fueler?

Aircraft fuelers are professionals responsible for safely refueling airplanes and helicopters on the ground. They ensure that the correct type and amount of fuel is delivered to each aircraft, following strict safety protocols to prevent accidents or contamination. Aircraft fuelers also inspect fueling equipment, maintain fuel records, and communicate closely with pilots and ground crew. This role is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of airports and flight schedules.

What does an aircraft fueler do?

An aircraft fueler has many job duties, all of which are completed outdoors in a wide variety of weather conditions. Some companies refer to this position as a fuel handler instead of an aircraft fueler, but the job duties are the same. As an aircraft fueler, you work diligently to refuel airliners and jets with either aviation gasoline or jet fuel, depending on the model. You climb ladders or step stools to access the fuel port on the planes you are refueling, attach a large hose to the aircraft, and pump the fuel into the plane from trucks on the ground. This job can be dangerous, and some of the responsibilities associated with it are considered hazardous.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an aircraft fueler?

To thrive as an Aircraft Fueler, you need a solid understanding of aviation fueling procedures, safety regulations, and basic mechanical aptitude, often supported by a high school diploma and on-the-job training. Familiarity with fueling trucks, hydrant systems, and safety management systems is essential, and certifications such as OSHA safety training are often required. Attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure set top performers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure safe, timely, and accurate fueling operations, minimizing risks and supporting efficient airport and airline operations.

Is an aircraft fueler a hard job?

Aircraft fuelers perform physically demanding work that involves handling fuel, operating fueling equipment, and working in outdoor environments often exposed to weather conditions. The job requires attention to safety protocols and sometimes involves working irregular hours or shifts. While it can be physically challenging, proper training and adherence to safety standards help manage the workload effectively.
