What is an Airbyte job?

An Airbyte job typically involves working with Airbyte, an open-source data integration platform used to automate data movement between systems. Roles may include data engineers, developers, or analysts responsible for configuring, maintaining, and optimizing data connectors and pipelines. These jobs often require knowledge of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, SQL, APIs, and cloud services. Professionals in this field ensure seamless data synchronization across databases, warehouses, and applications.

What are the typical responsibilities of a data engineer working with Airbyte?

A data engineer working with Airbyte is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining data integrations between diverse sources and destinations using the Airbyte platform. Their day typically includes configuring connectors, troubleshooting sync issues, optimizing data flows, and coordinating with business analysts or engineers to understand data requirements. The role often involves ensuring data accuracy, monitoring pipeline performance, and contributing to automation and scalability improvements. Since Airbyte is open-source and rapidly evolving, data engineers in this role frequently collaborate with other team members to stay updated on new features and resolve integration challenges efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Airbyte position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a role focused on Airbyte, you need strong data engineering skills, proficiency in ETL (extract, transform, load) processes, and familiarity with cloud data platforms, commonly backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with the Airbyte open-source data integration platform, REST APIs, SQL, and relevant certifications such as Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer are valuable assets. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help in troubleshooting data issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient data pipeline creation, seamless data integration, and optimal team performance.

Job description

Airbyte is the open‑source standard for data movement. We've enabled data teams to move data from applications, APIs, unstructured sources and databases to data warehouses, lakes, and AI applications. With tens of thousands of connectors built and hundreds of thousands of companies adopting Airbyte, we've proven the economics of data integration at scale. And now Airbyte is building the frontier agentic data infrastructure, purpose-built for AI agents that need fast, accurate access to data across hundreds of sources. Our mission: make data available and actionable, everywhere.
We've raised $181M from the world's top investors (Benchmark, Accel, Altimeter, Coatue, Y Combinator, etc.) and we believe in product-led growth, where we build something awesome that all our users love. We've raised enough capital to explore boldly, but we still choose to move quickly, stay scrappy, and experiment constantly as we find the right paths in an AI-native landscape.
The Role:
At Airbyte, connectors are the product. Every sync, every AI workflow, and every customer use case depends on our ability to reliably integrate with APIs, databases, filesystems, and SaaS platforms at massive scale.
We're looking for an Integrations Engineer to help build the future of AI-assisted integrations at Airbyte. This role spans both Airbyte Data Replication and Airbyte Agents, our AI-native platform that gives agents reliable, real-time access to business data through managed connectors, secure credential handling, a searchable Context Store, and agent-facing interfaces including APIs, MCP, SDKs, CLI tooling, and the web application.
You'll work primarily in Python across our CDKs, Connector Builder ecosystem, automation frameworks, rollout systems, and AI-driven operational tooling. This is a highly autonomous role for an engineer who thrives in ambiguous environments, exercises strong technical judgment, and wants to shape how AI changes software development and operational reliability. You'll help drive Airbyte toward a future where connectors increasingly maintain themselves through intelligent automation, adaptive rollouts, and AI-assisted remediation.
What You'll Do:
  • Build and evolve the Python systems that power integrations across both Airbyte Data Replication and Airbyte Agents.
  • Work on integrations that power both traditional data movement workflows and AI agent use cases, including searchable context, action execution, and real-time business data access.
  • Build systems that use AI to detect, diagnose, and remediate connector failures with minimal human intervention.
  • Design tooling and abstractions that enable Airbyte engineers to build, roll out, and monitor integrations faster and more reliably.
  • Drive initiatives focused on self-healing infrastructure, intelligent retries, automated compatibility fixes, and operational resilience.
  • Partner closely with Customer Engineering and Support teams to identify recurring operational issues and eliminate them systematically through automation and platform improvements.
  • Lead technically ambiguous projects from exploration through production rollout while balancing speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Mentor engineers, raise technical standards, and help shape engineering direction across the integrations ecosystem.

What You'll Need:
  • 5+ years professional experience building backend systems and developer tooling in Python.
  • Experience designing extensible frameworks, APIs, automation systems, or platforms used by other engineers.
  • Experience leveraging AI or LLM APIs in engineering workflows, developer tooling, operational systems, or product experiences.
  • Ability to independently drive large or ambiguous technical initiatives and make strong tradeoff decisions with business context in mind.
  • Strong systems thinking and debugging skills across complex distributed or integration-heavy environments.
  • Experience improving engineering velocity and operational reliability through automation and platform investments.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, support, and customer-facing teams.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction beyond your immediate team.
  • A strong bias toward shipping, iteration, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Passion for developer experience and building tools that make other engineers dramatically more effective.
  • Belief in our values and a willingness to own outcomes end-to-end.

Nice To Have:
  • Experience working with data integration systems, ETL/ELT pipelines, APIs, or connector frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Airbyte CDKs, Connector Builder, MCP servers, agent tooling, or low-code integration platforms.
  • Experience building AI agents, operational automation systems, or self-healing infrastructure.
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining open source projects.
  • Familiarity with rollout strategies, progressive deployments, compatibility migrations, or automated remediation systems.
  • Experience working with large-scale API ecosystems and handling schema evolution, rate limiting, or unreliable upstream systems.

Location:
  • Onsite 4 days/week in San Francisco, CA

If you find this role exciting, we encourage you to apply even if you think you don't meet all of the requirements!
