Role and Scope of Position:
Associate Engineer in Transmission System Planning assists in transmission system studies and project development by carrying out assignments associated with the modeling and development of Eversource's transmission system. The role provides support for power system study model development and maintenance and performs technical analysis under guidance. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, stability, electromagnetic transient, and short circuit.

Transmission System Planning team has the task of making sure that Eversource's future bulk power system serves our customers safely and reliably and meets applicable reliability National and local State Interconnection Standards. The group must look ahead between near- and long-term planning horizon into the future to determine what upgrades are needed in order for the transmission and distribution system to comply with the local State regulatory requirements as well as complying with National and Regional Standards.

The Transmission System Planning, Associate Engineer role supports the development and analysis of electric transmission system models and assists in evaluating system performance under various operating conditions. This role is designed for recent graduates with foundational knowledge in power systems and electrical engineering who are eager to gain hands-on experience in utility planning and reliability studies.

  • Supports development and maintenance of the system models for transmission studies under guidance of more senior Engineers. This includes:

    • Collection and review of the forecast loads to be included in the model

    • Collection, modification, and review of a variety of electric system parameters including: equipment ratings, impedances, contingency sets, protection and control parameters, as well as system topology

    • Collection, modification, and review of electric system modeling for steady state, stability, short circuit, and EMT analyses

  • Assists with transmission planning studies in the entire Eversource service territories. This includes:

    • Preparation of study scopes based on determined study assumptions

    • Verification of technical information and models according to modeling processes

    • Application of corporate planning standards in conjunction with any other applicable NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE reliability standards and criteria

    • Supporting solutions development to mitigate identified significant adverse impacts by testing solution alternatives as directed

    • Providing support to more senior Engineers for interfacing with various ISO-NE staff, DER and Distribution System Planning, line and substation engineering, asset management, siting, environmental and permitting, operations, etc. for the determination of system impacts and proposed solutions

    • Documentation of study results in study reports

    • Assisting Senior Engineers for providing study updates and presenting study results to regulatory agencies, customers, and affected parties

  • Other supporting tasks include:

    • Study process automation for routines with transmission analysis tools.

    • Clearly and effectively communicates the results of analyses both verbally and in writing

    • Assists with development of training modules

Essential Functions:

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; possesses and applies the fundamental engineering concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Knowledge with power system transmission analysis tools such as PSSE, TARA, EMS, ASPEN, PSCAD, or other similar analysis software

  • Knowledge of programming language such as Python

  • Knowledge of new technologies including but not limited to photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery

  • Knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system

  • Knowledge of National, State and other planning standards and reliability criteria

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, focus in Power Systems.

Experience:

  • 0-3 years related experience is required, internship experience is preferred.
  • Relevant experience in planning, design, and/or operations related to transmission lines, substation facilities, with knowledge of power system planning.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • Depending on the specific nature of the engineering role, position may require occasional to significant travel by car. A valid driver's license is required.

$82,800.00-$92,000.00
