What is the difference between Aia Architect vs Licensed Architect?

AspectAia ArchitectLicensed Architect
CredentialsMembership in AIA, possibly with certificationState licensure, professional license
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, architectural practices, project teamsSame as Aia Architect, often with additional legal responsibilities
Industry UsageDesign and planning roles, often recognized in industryLegal authority to sign and approve plans, required for project approval

While Aia Architects are members of the American Institute of Architects and may hold certifications, Licensed Architects have obtained state licensure, granting legal authority to sign off on projects. Both roles work in similar environments, but only Licensed Architects can assume legal responsibilities for building plans and permits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AIA Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AIA Architect, you need a professional architecture degree, architectural licensure, and a deep understanding of design principles, building codes, and construction methods. Familiarity with CAD/BIM software like AutoCAD, Revit, and project management tools, as well as AIA accreditation, is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills help architects effectively work with clients, engineers, and contractors. These skills and qualifications ensure the delivery of safe, innovative, and sustainable architectural solutions that meet client needs and regulatory standards.

What are AIA Architects?

AIA Architects are licensed professionals who are members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), a leading organization for architects in the United States. These architects are committed to upholding high standards of design, ethics, and continuing education. They are responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing the construction of buildings while ensuring safety, functionality, and sustainability. Membership in the AIA indicates that an architect adheres to the organization's code of ethics and standards of practice.

What are some common challenges AIA Architects face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

AIA Architects often juggle several projects at different stages, which requires effective time management and clear communication with clients, consultants, and team members. Balancing competing deadlines, maintaining design quality, and ensuring compliance with regulations can be demanding. To address these challenges, architects typically use project management tools, delegate tasks within multidisciplinary teams, and establish regular check-ins to keep all parties aligned. Developing strong organizational and leadership skills over time can significantly help in managing workload and advancing in this career.

Job description

cove is the world's first AI-powered, human-centered architecture firm. We're looking for a licensed Project Architect who wants to shape outcomes, not chase deliverables. We need someone ready to lead projects end-to-end across residential, commercial, hospitality, adaptive reuse, and specialized international work, from concept through CA.
You'll partner with designers, engineers, and a proprietary AI toolset that handles the work that traditionally slows great architecture down like early-phase analysis, code checks, drafting everything one wall at a time, documentation QA so your time goes to design dialogue, client relationships, and getting buildings built well. You won't just use the tools: our PMs work directly with our in-house software team, and a new version ships every week. Joining now means outsized influence on what AI-native practice becomes.
Our diverse portfolio includes:
  • Residential & Multi-Family: Urban infill, mixed-use communities, and thoughtfully designed residential spaces.
  • Commercial & Mixed-Use: Office buildings, retail environments, and integrated developments enhancing community engagement.
  • Hospitality & Adaptive Reuse: Creative and sustainable transformations of existing structures and new hospitality spaces.
  • Specialized & International: Unique educational, cultural, and institutional projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead projects from schematic design through construction administration, with primary accountability for schedule, budget, scope, and quality
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, team resources, and client expectations.
  • Manage consultant teams, contracts, and fee structures; oversee work plans and staffing projections.
  • Serve as the primary client point of contact, managing expectations, communications, and change orders.
  • Oversee QA/QC of construction documents and coordinate with the design team to maintain design intent through construction administration.
  • Navigate permitting, entitlements, and jurisdictional approvals.
  • Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of architects, designers, and engineers.
  • Mentor junior team members and foster professional growth.
  • Develop strong, lasting client relationships.
  • Partner with our software team to shape the AI tools that power your work.

Essential qualifications:
  • 7+ years of architectural experience - Including 3+ years in a project management or project architect role, with demonstrated experience running projects through all phases (SD through CA), including fee management, consultant coordination, and construction administration
  • Leadership- experience leading cross functional teams in an architectural office
  • Licensed architect in good standing (required); NCARB certification a plus
  • Technical proficiency - Proficiency in Revit and familiarity with project management tools (Deltek, Monograph, Newforma, or similar)
  • Code & contract knowledge - Working knowledge of building codes, zoning, and contract administration (AIA documents)
  • Design Excellence Mindset - You believe great architecture can be both beautiful and data-driven
  • Self-management skills - You can juggle multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholders without losing focus on quality
  • Technology optimism - You see AI as leverage for better architecture, not a threat to the craft. You're curious about how new tools change the work, and you want to help shape that - not just adopt it
  • Education - Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Architecture

What makes you stand out:
  • Portfolio of award-winning or published projects
  • Experience with high-end residential, commercial, or mixed-use developments
  • Track record of mentoring junior staff

Application Process:
To join our innovative team at Cove Architecture, please submit your resume and portfolio along with a project list detailing your role, project size, scope, and delivery outcomes (schedule and budget performance). We look forward to exploring how your expertise can contribute to creating transformative, human-centered spaces. If your portfolio and project list is not already listed on your resume, please email it to lauren.white@cove.inc AFTER you apply for the role.
What's In It for You:
  1. 100% Employer Paid Health insurance
  2. Vision and Dental benefits
  3. Employer-paid public transit pass and biking stipend
  4. Competitive Pay
  5. Work-Life Balance
  6. Onsite Gym membership
  7. Hybrid Work
  8. Unlimited Paid time off and holidays
  9. Snacks, beer, team events
  10. A clear path forward since we're growing, and PMs here have a runway to Senior PM, Associate, and Principal as the firm scales

cove is proud to recruit and hire talented people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or transgender status), age, or disability.
The pay range for this role is:
95,000 - 120,000 USD per year (Atlanta)
