What is an AI program?

AI programs are software applications designed to simulate human intelligence processes such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making. They use algorithms, data, and computational power to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, including language understanding, image recognition, and decision automation. AI programs can be found in various industries, powering technologies like virtual assistants, recommendation systems, and automated customer service. Their capabilities are continually evolving as advancements in machine learning and data processing occur.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in AI program management, and how can they overcome them?

Professionals in AI program management often face challenges such as ensuring effective communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders, managing rapidly evolving project requirements, and staying updated with the latest advancements in AI technologies. To overcome these hurdles, successful AI program managers focus on fostering collaborative team environments, maintaining flexible project plans, and continuously investing in professional development. Regularly aligning goals with stakeholders and encouraging cross-functional learning are also key strategies for managing complexity and driving project success.

Clinton Health Access Initiative

Job description

Overview
The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.
At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org
CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.
Program Overview
Leveraging deep expertise in strengthening healthcare systems, CHAI has launched an ambitious Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative to support Ministries of Health to systematically capture and scale the benefits of AI. The CHAI AI program seeks to support Ministries to reimagine what is possible with technology, building towards a vision of "AI Native Health Systems" that makes health care delivery accessible, high-quality, and efficient. There are four pillars of the strategy: (1) bringing the capabilities of world-class clinical intelligence or "AI Doctors" to every clinician and patient, (2) developing and deploying new "AI Diagnostics" that decentralize and improve quality of diagnoses, and (3) health systems AI applications, or the creation of "National Health Intelligence Centers" that improve systems capacity in disease surveillance, financial and workforce management, supply chain, and beyond. Finally, (4) to fully realize the potential of these uses of AI, CHAI is also supporting Ministries of Health to strengthen "AI Foundations", including physical and digital infrastructure, governance, and workforce strategy.
Position Overview
The Manager, AI - Special Projects will work directly with the Senior Director, Head of AI to help build, coordinate, and scale CHAI's AI team during a period of rapid growth. This is a broad, high-ownership role for someone who wants to operate at the center of a fast-moving team: shaping strategy one week, standing up a new area of work the next, and rolling up their sleeves to solve whatever is most critical to the team's success. The individual will need to move fluidly between high-level strategic thinking and hands-on execution.
The individual will support the development of the team's core strategy and contribute to ambitious fundraising efforts, helping translate vision into compelling proposals and plans. They will take ownership of potential new expansion areas of AI work-exploring initial strategies, testing feasibility, and helping recruit the first members of new teams. As the team scales from a small founding group to more than twenty people in the next year, the individual will be a key partner in making that growth happen, pitching in wherever needed across hiring, operations, and delivery.
The individual will also coordinate engagement across CHAI's 30+ country offices, ensuring the AI team integrates smoothly into CHAI's existing programs and country structures. We are seeking someone who is an advanced user of modern AI productivity tools, thrives in ambiguity, communicates with clarity, and picks up new topics quickly. This role reports to the Senior Director, Head of AI, requires extensive travel to CHAI country offices, and carries a strong preference for colocation in Boston to work in person with the Head of AI.
Responsibilities
  • Support the development of the AI team's core strategy, and contribute to ambitious fundraising efforts including proposal development and donor engagement
  • Take ownership of potential new expansion areas of AI work, exploring initial strategies, assessing feasibility, and helping recruit the first members of new teams
  • Serve as a key partner in scaling the team, pitching in across hiring, onboarding, operations, and delivery as needed
  • Coordinate engagement across CHAI's 30+ country offices and ensure smooth integration of the AI team into CHAI's existing programs and country structures
  • Move fluidly between strategic analysis and hands-on execution, taking on whatever is most critical to the team's success at a given moment
  • Use modern AI productivity tools to build, automate, and systematize the team's own ways of working
  • Prepare high-quality strategic materials, analyses, and communications for internal and external audiences
  • Represent the AI team at conferences and in external forums as needed
  • Undertake other responsibilities as needed to support the growth and success of the team

Qualifications
  • Passion for AI and its potential to improve health systems in low- and middle-income countries
  • 4 to 8 years of relevant professional experience
  • Advanced user of modern AI productivity tools (e.g., Claude Cowork, Claude Code, Codex) with a genuine passion for tinkering and building
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to distill complex topics clearly
  • Strong analytical ability and a demonstrated capacity to pick up new topics quickly
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, high-growth, limited-structure environment and to handle ambiguity
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively to CHAI country offices and represent the team at conferences
  • Strong preference for colocation in Boston, working in person with the Head of AI and from a CHAI office 1-2 days per week when not travelling

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in health, global development, or a related field
  • Experience in management consulting or a similar analytical, fast-paced setting
  • Experience supporting the growth or operations of a rapidly scaling team
