What is an AI labelling?

An AI labelling job involves annotating data—such as images, text, audio, or video—to help train machine learning models. This process includes tasks like tagging objects in images, transcribing speech, or categorizing text. The labelled data is crucial for AI systems to learn and make accurate predictions. These jobs are commonly found in industries like tech, healthcare, and autonomous driving. Attention to detail and consistency are key skills for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in AI labelling?

To thrive in an AI Labelling role, you need attention to detail, basic data analysis skills, and the ability to follow complex guidelines, with many roles requiring at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with data annotation tools, image or text labeling platforms, and sometimes basic scripting or database systems is beneficial. Strong communication, time management, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure the consistent and accurate labeling of data, which is critical for training high-quality AI and machine learning models.

What are some typical challenges faced in AI labelling roles and how can they be managed?

One common challenge in AI Labelling roles is maintaining accuracy and consistency when labeling large volumes of data according to detailed guidelines, which can become repetitive or mentally taxing. Managing these challenges often involves taking regular breaks, double-checking work, and staying up-to-date with any updates to annotation standards provided by the team. Collaborating with supervisors and peers to clarify uncertainties and seek feedback also helps ensure high-quality output. Over time, professionals in this role often develop efficient workflows and a keen eye for detail, opening doors to advancement into quality assurance or project coordination positions within the data annotation field.

Job description

Description:

The Job: We are seeking a Product Development Specialist to own formula tracking, ingredient management, and regulatory and label compliance for our dietary supplement business. Reporting to the Director of Product, this person will bring strong working knowledge of label and regulatory compliance requirements to every formula and label review. This individual will also bring a strong command of spreadsheets to manage formula documentation and reformulation cost modeling, along with fluency in modern AI tools to accelerate research, documentation, and content development. This role is critical to keeping every formula, its supporting documentation, and its label accurate, compliant, and audit-ready as our product portfolio continues to grow.

Responsibilities:

Formula & R&D Process Tracking

  • Maintain a master tracking system for every formula in active development, capturing status, key decision points, and stakeholders at each stage
  • Own the handoff process from R&D to Production and Operations, ensuring that finalized formulas, specifications, and supporting documentation transfer without loss of critical information
  • Support the new product development (NPD) launch timeline by tracking formula status and flagging risks that could delay a concept-to-launch schedule
  • Report stalled or at-risk formula projects to Product leadership before they result in production delays
  • Ingredient Management & Reformulation Analysis
  • Track all ingredients used or under evaluation in R&D, including specifications, suppliers, and status
  • Assess and communicate the downstream implications of proposed reformulations, including cost, sourcing, label impact, and formulation compatibility, before changes are finalized
  • Build cost models for proposed reformulations and provide direct input into sourcing and procurement decisions
  • Maintain a current view of ingredient usage across the full product portfolio to identify conflicts or opportunities early

Quality Documentation

  • Maintain official, audit-ready documentation for every finished formula and its Bill of Materials (BOM)
  • Ensure formula records and BOMs remain synchronized with the latest approved version at all times
  • Support internal and external quality audits by producing accurate documentation upon request

Regulatory & Label Compliance

  • Apply strong working knowledge of label and ingredient compliance requirements to ensure formula and label content meets applicable regulations
  • Review formula, ingredient, and sourcing changes for label impact before they reach the design team
  • Partner with the design team to translate formula and compliance requirements into accurate, launch-ready label content
  • Monitor evolving labeling and claims regulations and communicate relevant updates to internal stakeholders

Educational & Wiki Content

  • Write and maintain the internal product wiki, including plain-language explanations of every ingredient used
  • Update this content as formulas evolve so that it remains a reliable reference for Sales, Customer Service, and other teams
Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Nutrition, or a related field
  • A minimum of three years of experience in product development, R&D, quality, regulatory affairs, or documentation within dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, or food and beverage manufacturing
  • In-depth knowledge of dietary supplement labeling and regulatory requirements, including FDA and FTC standards
  • Advanced proficiency in spreadsheet applications, including pivot tables, lookups, and large-scale data organization
  • AI Tool Fluency: Strong fluency with artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot, for research, data organization, and content drafting
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, such as NetSuite, SAP, or Deacom, for managing Bills of Materials and production data
  • Demonstrated ability to build cost models and translate them into sourcing and procurement recommendations
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical formula and ingredient information into clear, accurate content for a non-technical audience
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent formula, compliance, and documentation projects while maintaining accuracy
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across departments and build trust with R&D, Production, Quality, and Design
