Agricultural finance refers to the management of financial resources and services that support farming and agribusiness activities. It involves providing credit, loans, and financial products to farmers, agribusinesses, and rural communities to help them purchase equipment, seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs. Agricultural finance also includes risk management, insurance, and financial planning tailored to the unique needs of the agricultural sector. By ensuring access to capital, agricultural finance plays a vital role in enhancing productivity and sustainability in agriculture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in agricultural finance?

To excel in Agricultural Finance, a solid understanding of finance, accounting, and agribusiness, often backed by a finance or agricultural economics degree, is essential. Familiarity with financial analysis software, loan origination systems, and sector-specific risk assessment tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, relationship management, and communication skills help professionals build trust with clients and navigate complex agricultural markets. These competencies ensure effective financial solutions, risk management, and sustained growth in the unique landscape of agricultural lending and investment.

Description of Work
The Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for an Agricultural Banking and Finance position at the rank of assistant or associate professor. This 9-month (academic year), tenure-track appointment will develop and maintain nationally and internationally recognized research, teaching, and outreach programs in agricultural banking and finance, including oversight of the undergraduate Agricultural Banking and Finance Program. Located in Lincoln, Nebraska, the position apportionment is 50% research and 50% teaching.
The successful candidate will provide leadership for the Agricultural Banking and Finance Program in the Department of Agricultural Economics. This includes recruiting, advising, and mentoring approximately 30 to 40 students in the program, along with fostering scholarship and internship support from the Nebraska Banking Association.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in areas such as rural appraisal, agricultural banking, and finance, with opportunities to develop additional undergraduate complementary courses in financial management and analysis. The faculty member is also expected to contribute to graduate education and support the development and strengthening of graduate offerings in agricultural banking and finance.
The incumbent will develop a research program that addresses key issues in agricultural finance. Areas of emphasis may include capital markets, financial institutions, and risk management within the agricultural sector. The research program is expected to advance understanding of financial performance, resilience, and decision-making across farms, agribusinesses, and rural economies. While grounded in issues relevant to Nebraska and the region, the program should also contribute to broader national and international discussions in agricultural finance.
The faculty member will engage with industry and stakeholders to enhance the relevance and impact of research and teaching, contributing to the department's mission of serving agricultural producers, agribusinesses, and rural communities.
The successful candidate will be expected to obtain and leverage external research support for these activities and to publish in appropriate high-impact journals. Activities include collaborating with the Nebraska banking industry, including being an active participant in the various state, regional, and national banking conferences.
Partnerships are expected with other IANR and UNL entities, regional university faculty, and public and private organizations focused on agricultural banking and finance. This includes opportunities to participate in the Center for Agricultural Profitability, Rural Prosperity Nebraska, Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program, Bureau of Business Research and other academic units within IANR.
All faculty with a CASNR academic appointment are expected to contribute to the instructional mission of the college. Specific course assignments may be changed over time based on academic unit need. Expectations for this position also include supporting unit recruitment efforts, the IANR science literacy initiative and their individual engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Service expectations include consulting with public programs (extension education and outreach) in the department and public relations (e.g., giving public lectures and writing popular articles). Opportunities exist for science literacy programming for PK-12 teachers and their students. The incumbent will also be expected to contribute to University, Institute, College and Department programs through service on committees.
Recognizing that collaboration and participation in teams enhances creativity, innovation, impact, and a sense of belonging, the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and Agricultural Economics are committed to creating learning, research, and Extension programming environments where the unique contributions of each individual are acknowledged and valued. At IANR, we see every person and every interaction as important to our collective wellbeing and our ability to deliver on our mission.
