Position Summary:
The Surety Underwriter is responsible for underwriting a portfolio of surety bond business in accordance with established company guidelines and risk appetite. This role involves evaluating applications, analyzing financial and credit data, and building relationships with agents and clients to develop quality business. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of surety or P&C underwriting experience and a strong working knowledge of the New York market.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Underwrite, review, and evaluate new and renewal surety bond submissions, including contract and commercial risks
  • Analyze financial statements, credit reports, and other relevant data to determine risk acceptability and pricing
  • Develop and maintain agent, broker, and client relationships to drive new business and retention
  • Issue quotes, binders, policies, and endorsements within designated authority levels
  • Ensure compliance with company underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and regulatory requirements
  • Negotiate terms and conditions of coverage in collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Collaborate with claims, accounting, and other departments to ensure high-quality service
  • Provide timely and accurate communication to agents, clients, and internal colleagues
  • Stay informed of market trends, industry issues, and competitor activity in the surety space
  • Contribute actively to process improvements and strategic initiatives

Required Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of direct surety or property & casualty underwriting experience, with a focus on surety bonds strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical and financial evaluation skills
  • Demonstrated customer service and relationship-buildingskills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizationalskills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with insurance management/underwriting systems a plus
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • In-depth knowledge of surety principles, underwriting practices, and regulatory guidelines
  • Eligibility to work in the United States; New York residency preferred

PreferredQualifications:
  • Active participation in insurance industry organizations (AAMGA, NASBP, SFAA, etc.)
  • Professional designations such as AFSB (Associate in Fidelity and Surety Bonding) or CPCU
  • Experience working with agency management or underwriting software

For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in New York, Starr Insurance Companies is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets: experience and training: licensure and certifications: and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $115,000.00 - $130,000.00
