Agency Nursing involves temporary assignments across multiple healthcare facilities, offering flexibility and variety. Hospital Staff Nurses work full-time within a single hospital, providing continuity of care. Both roles require RN licensure and similar certifications, but differ mainly in employment structure and work environment.

What is agency nursing?

Agency nursing refers to nurses who work for staffing agencies rather than being directly employed by a single healthcare facility. These nurses are placed in temporary positions at hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare settings, often to fill staffing shortages or cover for permanent staff who are on leave. Agency nurses enjoy flexible schedules and the opportunity to work in a variety of environments. However, they may have less job security and fewer benefits compared to permanent staff positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an agency nurse?

To thrive as an Agency Nurse, you need a valid nursing license, solid clinical skills, and experience in various healthcare settings. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and sometimes specific certifications like BLS or ACLS is important. Adaptability, strong communication, and the ability to quickly build rapport with new teams are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure agency nurses can deliver high-quality patient care and seamlessly integrate into different healthcare environments on short notice.

What are some common challenges agency nurses face when adapting to new healthcare settings?

Agency nurses often work in a variety of healthcare environments, which means adapting quickly to new teams, protocols, and electronic health record systems. One common challenge is becoming familiar with each facility's procedures and expectations in a short timeframe. Effective communication skills and adaptability are essential, as you may be expected to step into high-pressure situations and collaborate with permanent staff who are unfamiliar with your working style. However, these experiences can enhance your clinical skills and resilience, making you a highly versatile nursing professional.

What are nursing agency jobs?

Nursing agency jobs focus on providing medical services to patients outside of a hospital or other clinical environments. Registered nurses and health care assistants care for and monitor each patient and support outreach efforts. Outside of direct nursing roles, nursing agencies also have managers, care coordinators, and other administrative support positions in which people help with staffing and recruitment needs. Some of these roles do not require medical training or expertise, so you do not need to be a nurse to pursue a job with a nursing agency. Many details of nursing agency jobs vary by agency. For example, some agencies specialize in 24/7 care for patients while others provide general help and support. Most roles collaborate closely with doctors, physicians, and other caregivers.
