What is an age 14 job?

An Age 14 job refers to employment opportunities available to 14-year-olds, typically following labor laws that limit work hours and job types. Common jobs for this age group include babysitting, pet sitting, lawn mowing, and working in certain retail or food service positions. Many employers require a work permit or parental consent for younger workers. These jobs provide valuable experience, teach responsibility, and help teens earn their own money.

What jobs can a 14-year-old legally work?

At age 14, you can work in various part-time jobs such as babysitting, pet sitting, lawn mowing, retail, or food service positions like bussing tables or working at an ice cream shop. However, there are restrictions on the types of work you can do and the number of hours you can work, especially during the school year. Federal and state child labor laws typically prohibit hazardous jobs and limit work hours, so it's important to check your local regulations. Obtaining a work permit may also be required before starting a job.

What types of part-time jobs are commonly available to 14-year-olds, and what should I expect in terms of work hours and supervision?

At age 14, you can typically find part-time jobs such as babysitting, lawn mowing, pet sitting, or working as a cashier or stock clerk in small retail stores, ice cream shops, or fast food restaurants, depending on local labor laws. Expect to work limited hours, often restricted to after school or weekends, and always under close supervision by an adult or manager. Employers are legally required to ensure your safety and follow regulations regarding the types of tasks you can perform, so you'll usually receive guidance and support as you learn. These jobs are a great way to build responsibility, time management skills, and earn your first paycheck in a supportive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 14-year-old in part-time jobs, and why are they important?

To thrive in part-time jobs as a 14-year-old, you need basic literacy, numeracy, and a willingness to learn, along with any work permits required by local laws. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems or basic computer skills may be necessary for certain roles like retail or food service. Reliability, good communication, and a positive attitude are standout soft skills that help build trust with employers and customers. These skills and qualities are important because they ensure you can perform job duties effectively, work well with others, and gain valuable work experience for future opportunities.

Job description

Calling those passionate about supporting youth, building relationships, and helping young people explore career and enrichment opportunities!
Homewood Children's Village (HCV) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Homewood's children while simultaneously reweaving the fabric of the community in which they live. Through collaboration, engagement, and advocacy, we provide a continuum of services and programming, from cradle to career, creating opportunities for youth and families to build on their strengths and develop holistically.
We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic Youth Success Mentors to support youth ages 5-23 participating in our summer programming. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about mentoring, building meaningful relationships, and supporting young people in their growth, confidence, and future planning.
Our summer programming offers a range of experiences designed to meet youth at different stages of development. Youth Success Mentors may support programming focused on enrichment and social-emotional development for elementary-aged students, skill-building experiences centered around STEAM project-based learning for middle school youth, and career exploration and workforce readiness opportunities for older youth in the Learn and Earn program.
The Learn & Earn program engages youth in career exploration, skill development, and real-world learning through a tiered model: Tier 1 (age 14) focuses on career exploration; Tier 2 (ages 15-19) includes community-based work experiences; and Tier 3 (ages 20-23) focuses on advanced training and workforce preparation that can lead to certifications, employment, or registered apprenticeships.
Youth Success Mentors are typically assigned to a specific age group or program area, but may provide support across groups. In this capacity, they serve as mentors, role models, and success coaches for young people, supporting youth in building positive relationships, developing social-emotional and life skills, and (when applicable) navigating workplace expectations. Mentors also communicate with caregivers, supervisors, and team leads to ensure young people are consistently supported throughout the summer.
This position is part of AmeriCorps, a national service program that places members in community-based service roles.
Site Locations:
Pittsburgh Faison K-5 or multiple community worksites

  • Providing support during family orientation and youth training
  • Supporting youth and monitoring worksite expectations and attendance
  • Traveling on public transportation with youth to various career exploration and college preparation visits
  • Supporting youth with goal-setting and reflection
  • Helping organize and support the end-of-program celebration
