What is ag consulting?

Ag consulting, short for agricultural consulting, involves providing expert advice and services to farmers, agribusinesses, and other stakeholders in the agriculture industry. Consultants help clients improve crop yields, manage soil health, adopt new technologies, comply with regulations, and optimize farm operations for profitability and sustainability. They may specialize in areas like crop management, livestock production, agronomy, or environmental compliance. Ag consultants often work independently or as part of consulting firms, and their recommendations are based on scientific research and industry best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an agricultural consultant?

To thrive as an Agricultural Consultant, you need expertise in agronomy, soil science, crop management, and typically a degree in agriculture or a related field. Familiarity with precision agriculture tools, farm management software, and relevant certifications like Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) are often required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and relationship-building skills help consultants effectively advise and support farmers and agribusinesses. These competencies are crucial for delivering tailored solutions that improve productivity, sustainability, and profitability in the agricultural sector.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in ag consulting, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Ag Consulting often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing agricultural technologies, keeping up with evolving regulations, and managing diverse client expectations. Building strong relationships with clients and staying updated through continuous education are key to addressing these issues. Additionally, collaborating closely with agronomists, farmers, and researchers helps consultants stay ahead of trends and provide the most current and effective advice. Effective time management and clear communication are essential skills to navigate the busy seasonal cycles and varied client needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with growers, farm managers, and agricultural organizations to promote WWG's weather hardware and forecast services.

  • Identify, qualify, and engage potential clients by understanding their operational needs and site conditions, and tailor solutions accordingly.

  • Present and demonstrate weather monitoring solutions and forecast packages, and guide prospects through the decision-making and contract process.

Job description

Ag Sales

Department: Business Development

Reports to: Director of Client Solutions

Division: Sales

Location: California - On-site or Hybrid

Role Overview
The Ag Sales is the face of Western Weather Group in California. This role is responsible for growing WWG's presence among growers of high-value crops by building genuine, trust-based relationships with farmers, farm managers, grower associations, and agricultural cooperatives.

The Ag Sales will sell two core products: professional-grade weather monitoring stations tailored to agricultural environments, and meteorologist-backed forecast services that give growers the operational intelligence they need to make confident decisions at critical moments in the growing season. From frost windows on almond orchards to irrigation timing on wine grapes, the hardware this role helps place in the field has direct impact on crop outcomes and farm profitability.

This person will also help clients understand the value of defensible weather records, data that stands up when insurance claims, crop loss disputes, or regulatory events require documented proof of on-site conditions. The right candidate brings credibility in the ag community, a consultative approach to sales, and enough familiarity with environmental monitoring to speak the language of the grower and the field technician alike.

Responsibilities

Represent WWG with professionalism and integrity consistent with the company’s core values:

  1. Customer Focused - We value building long-term, equitable, and respectful relationships with our clients.
  2. Curiosity - We value approaching problems with an open and curious mind while employing scientific rigor to all that we do.
  • Expertise - We value being the experts at what we do while also having the humility necessary to use the experience.

Relationship Building and Market Development

  • Build WWG's reputation as the trusted regional source for weather hardware, managed data services, and professional forecast support.
  • Develop and maintain a strong presence in California’s agricultural community through direct grower engagement, trade association participation, and cooperative partnerships.
  • Attend relevant industry events, field days, and association meetings to deepen market relationships and generate referral pipelines.

Lead Generation and Qualification

  • Identify and prioritize growers of high-margin crops including tree nuts, wine grapes, table grapes, citrus trees, and other specialty crops where weather data drives meaningful financial decisions.
  • Identify growers and farming operations with a need for operational environmental and weather data, including frost protection, evapotranspiration tracking, heat accumulation, irrigation scheduling, and pest and disease modeling.
  • Prospect new clients through referrals, association contacts, direct outreach, and field visits.
  • Qualify leads by understanding operational needs, site conditions, budget, and who in the organization makes purchasing decisions.
  • Maintain accurate lead and client records in HubSpot.

Quoting, Proposals, and Solution Design

  • Work with growers to understand site-specific monitoring needs and configure tailored weather station solutions.
  • Deliver engaging demonstrations that connect WWG's capabilities to the specific crops, risks, and operations of each prospective client.
  • Collaborate with internal WWG technical and operations teams to prepare accurate proposals and supporting documentation.
  • Present forecast service options, including automated alerts and meteorologist-staffed advisory tiers, as part of a complete weather intelligence package.

Lead Nurturing and Closing

  • Follow up consistently with leads and open proposals to build trust and move opportunities toward contract execution.
  • Address objections and guide prospects through final decision-making, emphasizing both the operational value and the risk-mitigation value of having defensible, site-specific weather records.
  • Coordinate handoff to Client Operations for installation and onboarding, ensuring a smooth client experience from day one.
  • Provide voice-of-the-customer feedback to help shape product development and service offerings.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred, or equivalent hands-on experience in an agricultural, environmental, or related technical field.
  • Established relationships within the California’s agricultural community, with demonstrated ability to earn credibility among growers, farm managers, and cooperative or association staff.
  • Familiarity with weather and environmental monitoring, including an understanding of why on-site data matters to growers and what measurements are most relevant to high-value crop production.
  • Prior experience in technical or consultative sales is preferred. Candidates with strong agricultural backgrounds and a willingness to learn instrumentation and data products will also be considered.
  • Comfortable working with and learning data platforms, sensor hardware, and subscription-based weather service products.
  • Able to operate effectively in a field-based role with frequent grower site visits and regional travel, up to 50% of the work schedule.
  • Valid and unrestricted driver's license required.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future.

Core Competencies

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong ethical standards and sound judgment.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Strategic thinking with operational execution.
